Ostwald is a French commune in the department of Bas-Rhin in the region Grand Est (2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Illkirch-Graffenstaden and has 12,604 inhabitants (January 1, 2017).
geography
The municipality of Ostwald is located on the left bank of the lower Ill and borders the city of Strasbourg in the northeast . The built-up area in Ostwald merges seamlessly into the area of Strasbourg in the northeast and into the area of the municipality of Illkirch-Graffenstaden in the south . Other neighboring communities are Lingolsheim in the north-west and Geispolsheim in the south-west. In the municipal area of Ostwald there are several lakes ( Étang Gerig , Étang Bohrie ) and two smaller forest areas ( Neiderwald , Nachtweid ). The east of the community area is used for agriculture.

The Gothic St. Oswald Chapel ( Chapelle Saint-Oswald ), which today serves as a cemetery chapel, was originally the choir of a church that has since been demolished. The interior has beautiful glass windows from the second half of the 13th century. The former castle Château de l'Île has served as a luxury hotel since 1994. Several parts of the building have survived from the neo-Renaissance style complex built in 1891 (using elements from a previous building from the 17th century). The history of the Ostwalder Castle goes back to the year 1226 and the construction of the first building at this point. In the old town center of Ostwald there are still several half-timbered houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
Transport links
Ostwald is on line B of the Strasbourg tram network . The Autoroute A35 (Strasbourg- Basel ) leads through the south of the Ostwald community, in whose area the Aire de Nachtweid service station is located. The Strasbourg airport is located five kilometers from Ostwald.
