history

Illkirch is most likely a Franconian town foundation, without being able to give the exact date of foundation. In 720 the place is called Ellofanum , 826 Illechilechen, 1172 Illenkirchen and finally it got the current name, which refers to the river that crosses the village. Graffenstaden was a village that was next to Illkirch. Between 1790 and 1794 the two places were united for economic reasons.

When Rudolf von Habsburg ascended the throne of the Holy Roman Empire, in 1272 he gave his followers the order to come to his aid against Ottokar II , the King of Bohemia. In order to compensate them for their services, he raised some of the residents of Strasbourg to knighthood in 1284 . It is also the oldest title in which "Gravenstaden before the hatred" is mentioned. In addition, he gave his confidante Bernhard von Müllenheim the ford of Grafenstaden with the right to collect a toll . Since there was no bridge in Grafenstaden, the only way to cross the river was via this ford, which the Strasbourgers had previously done free of charge. This ford fell back to the city of Strasbourg in 1391; the money collected as a toll had to be delivered to the city every week.

Illkirch became known through Illkirch's document of surrender. Hans Georg von Zedlitz , one of the Stettmeister of Strasbourg at that time, who was married to Maria Esther von Müllenheim , sought help from the Reich in 1681 to avert the impending conquest of the imperial city by the soldiers of King Louis XIV of France under General Joseph de Montclar . Since this did not materialize, he finally had to sign the document of surrender from Illkirch on September 30, 1681 in order to avoid greater suffering .

In 1886 a horse-drawn tram line was set up between Strasbourg and Grafenstaden, which was electrified in 1900. In 1959 the line was given up, as was the entire Strasbourg tram network a year later. After almost 40 years, Illkirch-Graffenstaden was reconnected to the new Strasbourg tram network in 1998.
