The Jägerbataillon 291 ( JgBtl 291 ) is a mixed hunter and reconnaissance unit of the German Army in the Franco-German Brigade .
The name Jägerbataillon 291 is aligned with the number of the two other German units of the brigade , Jägerbataillon 292 and Artillery Battalion 295 . Both battalions belonged to the 29th Panzer Brigade, which was disbanded in 1993, and retained their numbers after being reclassified and placed under the Franco-German Brigade.
The battalion is located in Illkirch-Graffenstaden ( Alsace ) in the Leclerc barracks (Quartier Leclerc) , which is named after the French Major General Jacques-Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque . It is the first German task force since the end of the Second World War to be permanently stationed on French soil.

Lineup
After the French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that he would withdraw French troops from Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed on the stationing of German troops of the Franco-German Brigade in France following the 45th Munich Security Conference in 2009 .
Immediately afterwards the planning for the installation began. As of April 6, 2010, the advance command was stationed in France. The battalion was ceremonially commissioned on December 10, 2010 in the presence of Federal Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and his French counterpart Alain Juppé as part of a roll call in the Parc de l'Orangerie in Strasbourg .
The battalion took part in the French National Day military parade in Paris on July 14, 2012 .
Calls
In the second half of 2014, the battalion provided the READY battalion of the operational reserve (ORF) for KFOR , but was not called up.
In the spring of 2016, the battalion was in Lithuania for three months as part of the NATO PERSISTENT PRESENCE program . At the same time, the battalion provided infantry trainers and staff for the EU training mission in Mali ( EUTM MALI ) led by the Franco-German Brigade during this period .
From September 2018 to May 2019, the battalion was the lead unit for the 9th German contingent of the UN- led stabilization mission in Mali ( MINUSMA ). This was the battalion's first "closed" deployment.

The battalion staff is recruited from the independent staff platoon. This includes all team soldiers and non-commissioned officers of the staff.
The 1st Company, as a staff and supply company , has the company command group and the central transport and supply elements of the battalion, such as B. The 3rd company is equipped with the Fuchs TPz and is also divided into the company command, three fighter platoons, one heavy fighter platoon and a technical group.
The 4th Company is organized as a reconnaissance company of the Franco-German Brigade as a quasi-independent reconnaissance company. In addition to the company command, it has three Fennek reconnaissance platoons and a technical reconnaissance platoon with the ability to carry out radar reconnaissance . The company also has a light scouting group. The drone and field intelligence trains, which are normally in an independent reconnaissance company, are not deployed due to being stationed abroad. Since it was set up like an independent company, the company also has its own supply and transport capacities, as well as its own command post.
The mixed battalion is the only unit of the German army in which the two branches of the hunter and reconnaissance troops are united. With only three combat companies (2 hunter companies and 1 reconnaissance company) and a total of around 640 members, it is also significantly smaller than the other Bundeswehr hunter battalions, each comprising four combat companies and a total of around 1,000 soldiers.

The battalion's training area is located in the community forest. A former ammunition depot located there south of the Leclerc district serves as a training ground for fighting in the forest and for local and house combat.
Description of coat of arms and uniform
Against a silver background, three oak leaves lie on two crossed cavalry lances. The oak leaf as a beret badge for the hunter troop stands for immortality, steadfastness and loyalty. The crossed lances, which represent the beret badge of the army reconnaissance troops, refer to the tradition of the former cavalry groups as the forerunners of the reconnaissance troops. The combination of both elements in the battalion's coat of arms symbolizes the union of the two branches of service within the battalion.
In contrast to the soldiers of the sister battalion Jägerbataillon 292 , the soldiers of the battalion do not wear shawls (French "foulard de compagnie"), but the usual field suit of the Bundeswehr without modification. Here soldiers of the hunter companies wear the green strands of the hunter troops, the soldiers of the reconnaissance company wear gold-yellow strands as a sign of membership in the army reconnaissance troops. In principle, all soldiers on the staff also wear green braids; Soldiers who switch from the reconnaissance company to the staff, however, keep their golden yellow braids.
Sponsorships
The battalion is deeply rooted in the Bas-Rhin department . There are sponsorships with the cities / communities of Strasbourg , Erstein , Rhinau and of course with the garrison town of Illkirch-Graffenstaden . Soldiers of the battalion regularly take part in events in the communities, such as the celebrations of the respective ends of the world wars (November 11 - World War 1 ; May 8 - World War 2 ) as well as on the French National Day (July 14) . Appeals by the companies in the sponsored communities are also carried out with great participation by the population, for example when the company commanders change, and when they say goodbye to and welcome calls from the deployment.
So far there are no sponsorships on the German side of the Rhine.
Due to the affiliation to the reconnaissance troops of their respective countries, took over the sponsorship for the 4th company when the battalion of the 3 e régiment de hussards was set up .
Incidents with a special external impact
On April 26, 2017, Lieutenant Franco A. was arrested. He led a double life as a Syrian war refugee . The Federal Prosecutor's Office assumes that A. was planning a right-wing terrorist attack that was to be blamed on a fictitious refugee.
