The Eurométropole de Strasbourg is a French association of municipalities with the legal form of a metropolis in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region . It was founded on December 31, 1966 and today comprises 33 parishes. The administrative headquarters are in the city of Strasbourg . As a Eurometropolis, it is a member of the Strasbourg-Ortenau Eurodistrict and is therefore networked across borders.
Historical development
The community association was founded in 1966 as Communauté urbaine de Strasbourg (CUS) and initially comprised 27, later 28 communities when Blaesheim joined the CUS. The core city of Strasbourg makes up around 25 percent of the area and 60 percent of the population of the association. With effect from January 1, 2015, the association of municipalities was elevated to the legal form of a metropolis and changed its name to the current name.
With effect from January 1, 2017, the association took over the communes of the dissolved Communauté de communes les Châteaux .
