Fritz Panzer
Friedrich Bernhard Panzer (born March 2, 1955 in Judenburg , Styria ) is an Austrian publisher, cultural manager and author.
Life
Fritz Panzer grew up in the Upper Styrian district town of Judenburg in a Catholic family. In his childhood he was an altar boy for seven years and completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller after compulsory school. After a stay in Paris and his activity as department head of the Höllrigl bookstore in Salzburg, he was entrusted with the management of the Styria bookstore in Judenburg. There he developed a series of cultural activities between 1976 and 1980 and organized exhibitions and literary events (with HCArtmann , Peter Rosei , Milo Dor , Alfred Kolleritsch , Reinhard P. Gruber , Helmut Eisendle , Christine Nöstlinger , Dieter Preisl , Georg Pichler, among others ).
After a year-long journey through the United States and Canada in 1980, working for the Goethe Institute in Toronto , he completed after his return from 1981 to 1985 at the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg studying communication sciences , German studies and political science and received his doctorate there in 1985 with the dissertation "Contemporary literature and journalism in Austria". After completing his studies, he became head of the Viennese publishing house for social criticism , from 1987 to 1991 he was marketing and sales manager in the publishing company of the ÖGB , responsible for the Europa Verlag , the publishing house of the ÖGB, the Pichler delivery and the Pichler bookstores. As early as 1989 he founded the magazine and publishing house Buchkultur with Michael Schnepf, Kurt Hamtil and Manfred Kriegleder, and two years later Buchmarketing GmbH. In 1995 the first Viennese pocket bookshop "Yellow" was founded. From 1998 to 2000 he was the cultural representative of the Austrian participation at the EXPO2000 in Hanover and was primarily responsible for the project LebensKunst: KunstLeben with book publications, audio books and audio islands with texts by Austrian authors.
In 2000, after the sale of Buchmarketing GmbH and the bookstore, he was appointed managing director and publisher of the Ueberreuter publishing group . The imprint "Otherworld" for fantasy and the Wolfgang Hohlbein Prize , the highest endowed prize for fantastic literature at 10,000 euros , were then introduced . Prize winners included a. Nina Blazon with “Under the spell of the escape carrier” and Bernd Rümmelein with his fantasy saga “Kryson”.
In 2004 Panzer also took over the management of TOSA Verlag, in 2005 he took a stake in the publishing group and became a managing partner. He caused a special stir with the publication Das Leben des Jesus by Gerhard Haderer . In addition to the books with Haderer, he published the bestseller “Der dicke Deix” for which Manfred Deix received the prize of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and gave his legendary acceptance speech in verse. At Panzer's suggestion, a volume of poems by Manfred Deix was published a little later - including the rhymed correspondence between the publisher and the author.
In 2007, Lappan Verlag GmbH in Oldenburg , the German market leader in the humor / cartoons sector, was acquired by the Ueberreuter publishing group and management was taken over. The publishing group was the undisputed market leader in cartoons and published the books of the most famous cartoonists in German-speaking countries. In 2010 Panzer sold his shares in the publishing group and founded the publishing house and the Komische Künste gallery in Vienna's Museumsquartier with Thomas Zauner and Alfred Schierer . At the end of 2010, the first major exhibition by a cartoonist with originals by the German artist Gerhard Glück took place there, with great media attention - under the title “A Happiness for Art”. On the occasion of Gerhard Haderer's 60th birthday at the end of 2011, Panzer organized the largest exhibition of Haderer's original works to date (“Haderer's Austria”).
In 2011 Panzer handed over his shares and the management of Komische Künste GmbH to Clemens Ettenauer and became the sole managing director of the Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten GmbH . In mid-2015, the management of Augarten was handed over to Thomas König. Panzer lives in Vienna and is still working as a consultant for the manufactory today . In 2017 he founded the "Unshakable Club".
