action

Gloria , 58, mother of two grown children and divorced for 10 years, does not want to come to terms with being old and alone. That's why she often goes to single parties to dance. Although she is often disappointed there, she meets Rodolfo with whom she begins a passionate affair. Rodolfo is a few years older than Gloria, divorced a year ago and has two grown up daughters. They show little consideration for Rodolfo, repeatedly disturb him with phone calls, and he makes no attempts to separate himself and defends his stance when Gloria is irritated.

Rodolfo shows Gloria parts of his life, such as the Vertigo amusement park which he runs and which also has a paintball facility. At a meal with friends of Gloria, Rodolfo proves to be a supporter of the Chilean military dictatorship , in contrast to one of the friends who mourns the time before the military dictatorship . Rodolfo meets her family and her divorced husband at the birthday party of their son Glorias. Rodolfo reports on his previous employment with the Navy and that he continues to support his adult daughters as well as his divorced wife financially. When Gloria's children take a photo of her with her divorced husband, Rodolfo leaves the party unnoticed.

Gloria, discovering that she can no longer see as well, visits an ophthalmologist who diagnoses glaucoma and prescribes eye drops that she must take for the rest of her life. Gloria tries to prevent interference from Rodolfo at work. Rudolfo invites Gloria to a gambling resort for reconciliation. When they get to their room, Rodolfo's daughter calls and says that her mother has had an accident and that he urgently needs help. Since this is only one last point in a long series of disturbances and lapses in Rodolfo's independence, Gloria takes her things and wants to leave. Standing at the door, she makes up her mind and undresses for passionate make-up sex.

Later at dinner together, Rodolfo leaves Gloria under the pretense that he will be back soon. The disappointed Gloria throws herself into the nightlife and wakes up on the beach in the morning completely hungover. Back home, Gloria decides to break up with Rodolfo. She goes to his home and shoots paintballs at him and his house.

Her daughter, who is pregnant by a Swede, is leaving Chile. At the end of the film, Gloria finds herself at a family friend's wedding party and does not want to dance again. But when the song Gloria by Umberto Tozzi is played, she goes back to the dance floor.

Awards

  • Berlinale 2013: Actor Award for Paulina García

reception

"A portrait of a woman that is as sensitive as it is entertaining, alternating between gentle humor and melancholy and expanding a close look at the protagonist's living conditions at the margins to a panorama of a social climate that longs for changes in existing conditions."
