The Silver Bear for the best screenplay honors the best performance by one or more screenwriters on a competition film (feature film) at the annual Berlin Film Festival . In contrast to other film awards such as the Oscar, there is no distinction between the original script (a script that is not based on a previously published publication) and an adapted script (based on an already published literary template).

The award was first presented at the 58th edition of the film festival in 2008. The competition jury, which is mostly composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize.

Award winners

The most popular award for the best film script went to Chinese and American screenwriters (two wins each). Original scripts were from 2008 to 2011, and an adaptation was successful for the first time in 2012.
