occupation

The mother-of-pearl button (original title: El botón de nácar ) is a documentary by Patricio Guzmán. After Nostalgia of Light  (2010), the film is the second part of his documentary trilogy on the history of Chile . The film ran in the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival 2015 and received the Silver Bear for best screenplay . The cinema release in Germany was on December 10, 2015.

action

In the film, Guzmán refers to the ocean on the 4300 kilometer long coast of Chile and metaphorically interweaves his personal memories with historical set pieces from the bloody history of the country from the extermination of indigenous peoples to the massacres of the Pinochet regime. The sea absorbs all the voices of the earth as well as those of space, it receives impulses from the stars and transmits them to living organisms. It also holds the secret of the mother-of-pearl buttons that were found on the bottom. Chile's impressive landscape offers volcanoes, mountains and glaciers, filled with the voices of the natives of Patagonia, the English seamen and the political prisoners.

criticism

The film service judges that the "impressive combination of unusual nature and landscape images, old black-and-white photographs of the indigenous population of Patagonia and philosophical off-commentaries allude to fundamental questions about human nature and its destiny".

Awards

The film received a total of 10 awards and 5 nominations. In addition to the Silver Bear, the film also won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Berlinale . Other awards include an honorable mention at the Human Rights Award at the Bergen International Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the Philadelphia Film Festival.
