Patricio Guzmán
Patricio Guzmán Lozanes (born August 11, 1941 in Santiago de Chile , in Chile ) is a director and producer of documentary films .
Life
Guzmàn was already enthusiastic about documentary films as a teenager. Films by Louis Malle , Frédéric Rossif and Chris Marker influenced him. He studied history and philosophy at the Universidad de Chile in the early 1960s and from 1963 to 1966 at the Film Institute of the Catholic University of Chile . He then went to Madrid and graduated from the Escuela Oficial de Cine with an examination as a film director.
On his return to Chile he became director of the documentary film workshop of Chile-Films . He completed his film about Salvador Allende's first year in office in 1971. The film was shown all over Chile. He began filming his trilogy about Allende in 1972 last year. After the coup of the armed forces on September 11, 1973, Guzmán was detained for 15 days in the national stadium in Santiago de Chile. Since Guzmán also had Spanish citizenship, he was able to travel to Spain with the completed film roles for the 4½-hour trilogy La Batalla de Chile . With the help of the Cuban Film Institute ICAIC , the film was finished and edited in Cuba .
Guzmán's other filmmaking continues to deal with themes from his homeland. In 1997 he founded the International Documentary Film Festival in Santiago de Chile. From 1997-2006 he was the director of the festival.
Guzmán lives in Paris with Renate Sachse and has two daughters, Andrea and Camila, who also make films and occasionally work on his films.
The film "The Mother of Pearl" had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2010. It has received praise from many reviewers. For example, Die Zeit wrote :
“The fascinating documentary" Nostalgia de la luz "is the sum of the life's work of Patricio Guzmán. .. Documentary .. which - a masterly sum of a weighty life's work - asks the big questions about where from, why and where to. "
