Goya 2005

The Goya 2005 , the most important Spanish film award , was presented on January 30th. The big winner was Alejandro Amenábar's drama The Sea in Me , which deals with euthanasia and was considered a big favorite in advance. With 15 nominations, the film about Ramón Sampedro , which later received the Oscar and the Golden Globe , won half of the 28 categories, including the most prestigious. Alejandro Amenábar has already had international successes as a director with Virtual Nightmare - Open Your Eyes and The Others .

As the best film, The Sea in Me prevailed against La Mala Educación - Bad Education by Pedro Almodóvar and Roma by Adolfo Aristarain , both of which went empty-handed. Best European film was the German contribution Gegen die Wand by the multiple award-winning director Fatih Akın . The German film was able to assert itself against the British historical drama The Girl with the Pearl Earring starring Scarlett Johansson . While the Uruguayan festival success whiskey won the category Best Foreign Film in Spanish, the Spanish actor José Luis López Vázquez , whose career began in the 1930s, received the honorary Goya.
