action

Sister Consuelo was the mother superior of a monastery in Catalonia in the early 1950s . One day she begins to raise money to convert the monastery hospital into a home for the elderly. While looking for financial support, she met the wealthy landowner Don Augusto Aixelá. This shows interest in the project, which is why they see each other frequently in the following years. Sister Consuelo feels increasingly drawn to Aixelá. She also learns details about Aixelá's romantic past, but also that he supported Franco in the Spanish Civil War .

While the region is ravaged by floods and parts of the monastery are also under water, Sister Consuelo wrestles with her feelings. In a letter to her superiors, she guiltily reported about her love for Aixelá and asked for a transfer to another monastery. However, she does not send the letter. Despite her remorse and against her vow, she lets herself into a short romance with Aixelá. What love means to her, however, is nothing more to him than another of his numerous amorous adventures. Back at the monastery, she prays to Mary and decides to leave the monastery in secret.

On her way through the forest she meets bandits whose leader Balaguer was seriously wounded in an exchange of fire with soldiers. In his hiding place, she tends his wound while he tells her about his life. When soldiers discover the hiding place, Balaguer and his men are shot. Sister Consuelo then returned to the monastery, where from now on she was solely responsible for her job as a nun. But many years later, when she is dying, her last thoughts are not about the many benefits she has done throughout her life, but about her hours together with Aixelá, through whom she got to know love.

background

In 1992, novelist Eduardo Mendoza published his novel The Year of the Flood ( El año del diluvio ). Together with director Jaime Chávarri, he adapted his story about a nun who falls in love and surrenders to her passion for the screen. The film was shot in the municipalities of Mura and Navarcles in the province of Barcelona . Fanny Ardant was dubbed in the original version by the Spanish actress Mercedes Sampietro.

The film premiered on April 28, 2004 in Spain. It has not yet been published in Germany.

Reviews

Fernando Méndez-Leite from the Spanish Fotogramas raved about the “extraordinary Fanny Ardant”, who conveyed the “inevitable fate” of her role “with subtle delicacy”. Darío Grandinetti and Ginés García Millán could also convince in their roles, but "the queen of the film" is "without a doubt Fanny Ardant as one of the most sensual nuns you have ever seen".

Variety's Jonathan Holland found that Jaime Chavarri's film did not do justice to the original. Although Eduardo Mendoza was involved in the script, the film largely lacks "the grace and spirit" of the novel. Instead, it shows "a strange combination of cumbersome realism and unbelief".

Awards

In 2004, Chávarris Film was nominated for the Golden Biznaga at the Malaga Film Festival . A year later, Jaime Chávarri and Eduardo Mendoza received both a nomination for the Goya and the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos Award for their script .

  2. “La extraordinaria Fanny Ardant ejecuta el proceso de toma de conciencia del inevitable destino del personaje de Sor Consuelo con secreta sutileza. […] Darío Grandinetti y Ginés García Millán están muy bien en sus respectivos papeles, pero la reina de la función es, sin duda, Fanny Ardant, una de las monjas más sensuales que hemos visto. 3. "Though pic is co-scripted by Mendoza himself, the grace and wit of the original are mostly absent, replaced by an unlikely combination of plodding literalism on the one hand and sheer implausibility on the other." Jonathan Holland: Review: 'The Year Of The Flood' . In Variety , May 11, 2004.
