The girl with the pearl earring (original title: Girl with a Pearl Earring ) is a film by the British director Peter Webber from 2003. It is based on the novel of the same name by Tracy Chevalier . The drama was nominated for an Oscar in three categories .

action

In Delft , after her father lost his sight, 17-year-old Griet is employed as a housemaid for the famous painter Jan Vermeer . The master is impressed by the shy but very clever girl, familiarizes her with the world of painting and gives her the task of mixing his colors. Finally, at the urgent request of his patron Pieter van Ruijven, who is after the girl, Vermeer is supposed to paint her portrait. This in turn increases the latent tensions with Vermeer's wife, her insidious young daughter and the maid. The mother-in-law, on the other hand, recognizes how much Griet inspires the painter in his work. She holds her protective hand over Griet as long as Vermeer is only working on his pictures, which are the main source of income for the large family. When Vermeer's wife finds out that Griet was wearing her precious pearl earrings for the picture, the situation escalates. Griet has to leave the house and returns home. One day the maid gave her a sealed package with the pearl earrings she was wearing as a model.

For her novel of the same name, writer Tracy Chevalier was inspired by the anonymous girl from the painting The Girl with the Pearl Earring by the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer .

Some of Vermeer's pictures shown in the film are fictitious; others, like many of those shown in Van Ruiven's apartment, were actually in his possession. In many scenes of the film you can find objects from his pictures, such as the lute , the harpsichord , and some of the furniture of the studio, such as the large map of the Netherlands on the wall, the ruffled curtain or the chairs. In addition to Griet, other characters in the film are also made from characters from Vermeer's pictures, such as the maid or Vermeer's wife.

The German-language dubbing of the film was done by Christa Kistner Synchronproduktion GmbH, Berlin. The author of the dialogue book and dialogue director was Joachim Kunzendorf .

Reviews

“A painting by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer serves as the inspiration for the Spartan story of a young housemaid and her shy, hinted affection for the artist, whom she ultimately even sits as a model. The film, made without any concessions to contemporary tastes and audience expectations, translates the style of Dutch painting of the 17th century into a modern medium with virtuosity and tension. A homage to art and at the same time an extremely sensitive study of the Dutch town of Delft. "

“Did Vermeer have a relationship with his model? The film leaves that open - director Peter Webber suffices to describe a secret, he doesn't have to destroy it. Of course he was lucky enough to get Scarlett Johansson ("Lost in Translation") for his cinema debut. Kate Hudson was originally intended for the role, later Kirsten Dunst got into the conversation. At the end, when the camera opens up from the white of the earring and finally shows the original, you can see how lucky you actually were. "
