Yvonne Blake
Yvonne Blake (* 1940 in Manchester ; † July 17, 2018 in Madrid ) was a British costume designer who received an Oscar for best costume design as well as four Goya for best costumes and was nominated several times for this and other film awards.
Life
Yvonne Blake began her career as a costume designer in the film industry in 1966 for the film Fahrenheit 451 , in which she also played a supporting role, and has worked on the costume design of more than fifty films and television series .
At the 1972 Academy Awards , she and Antonio Castillo won an Oscar for best costume design for the period film Nikolaus und Alexandra (1971) directed by Franklin J. Schaffner about Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his wife Alexandra with Michael Jayston , Janet Suzman and Roderic Noble in the lead roles . At the same time, both were nominated for the British Academy Film Award for the best costumes .
She received further nominations for the BAFTA Film Award for Best Costume in 1974 for Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Norman Jewison with Ted Neeley , Carl Anderson and Yvonne Elliman , and in 1975 for The Three Musketeers (1973) by Richard Lester with Oliver Reed , Raquel Welch and Richard Chamberlain and 1976 for The Four Musketeers - The Revenge of My Lady (1974), which Richard Lester staged again with the main actors Reed, Welch and Chamberlain. For the costumes in this film, she was also nominated for an Oscar for best costume design with Ron Talsky .
In 1979 she and Richard Bruno were nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Costume in Superman (1978) by Richard Donner with Christopher Reeve , Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman in the leading roles. In 1987 she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Costume Design for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) -produced television film Casanova (1987) directed by Simon Langton, starring Richard Chamberlain, Faye Dunaway and Sylvia Kristel .
In the following years, Yvonne Blake, who was married to director Gil Carretero , worked for numerous Spanish film productions and won a Goya for the best costumes for Remando al viento (1988) by Gonzalo Suárez with Hugh Grant , Lizzy McInnerny and Valentine Pelka for the first time in 1989 . This was followed by nominations for the Goya in this category: On the one hand in 1992 for Don Juan en los infiernos (1991) by Gonzalo Suárez with Fernando Guillén , Mario Pardo and Charo López and on the other hand in 1993 for La reina anónima (1992), who was also by Gonzalo Suárez was filmed with Carmen Maura , Marisa Paredes and Juanjo Puigcorbé .
At the 1995 Goya award she won the Goya for the best costume for Canción de cuna (1994) by and with José Luis Garci as well as Dolores Aguado and Fiorella Faltoyano in other roles.
For the television film James Dean - A Life in the Fast Lane (2001) by Mark Rydell with James Franco , Michael Moriarty and Valentina Cervi , produced by TNT , she was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding costume design in 2002 together with Randy Gardell .
She then won the Goya twice for best costume design: 2004 for Carmen (2003) by Vicente Aranda with Paz Vega , Leonardo Sbaraglia and Antonio Dechent and in 2005 for The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004) by Mary McGuckian with F. Murray Abraham , Kathy Bates and Gabriel Byrne .
At the 2007 Goya award ceremony , she was nominated for the Goya for the best costumes in Goya's Ghosts by Miloš Forman with the main actors Natalie Portman , Javier Bardem and Stellan Skarsgård . For this film, she was also nominated for the 2007 Satellite Awards for best costume design .
Yvonne Blake later worked on the costume design for the Spanish television series Una carta para Evita with Malena Alterio, Rubèn Ametllé and Marcel Borràs, which was broadcast in 2012.
From 2016 until her death on July 17, 2018, she was Honorary President of the Spanish Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences (Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas), which awards the Goya every year.
