biography

Her father is of Irish descent and her mother has Japanese roots. She was born and raised in Honolulu. In 1969 she went to England , where she started working as a bar and club singer in London . Here she was discovered for background vocals for Eric Clapton . She sang on some of his records in the early 1970s (including I Shot the Sheriff ) and also received a record deal. In 1971 she sang alongside Tony Ashton on Jon Lord's solo album Gemini Suite .

She was spotted in a folk club by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice , who were just looking for the cast for the recording of their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar . They engaged Yvonne Elliman for the role of Maria Magdalena . When the musical was first performed on Broadway , she played this role as well as in the later film adaptation of Norman Jewison . In 1974 she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for this work as the first leading actress to come from a Pacific island .

In 1972 she released her first solo album. Five more followed in the 1970s, with average successes. Her album Nightflight came in 1978 as the best-selling to number 40 on the Billboard charts . She was more successful with the Bee Gees song If I Can't Have You in 1977. She recorded the song for the soundtrack album for the film Saturday Night Fever . The single reached number one on the Billboard charts.

In the late 1970s, she starred in two episodes of the television series Hawaii Five-Zero and then said goodbye to show business into private life. She married and gave birth to a daughter in 1982 and a son in 1985. In the 1990s some compilations of her best songs were released and in 2004 she returned to the music scene with a new album.
