family

Susanna Wesley was born Susanna Annesley in 1669. She was the last of 25 children. Her father was the Puritan pastor Samuel Annesley , a relative of Arthur Annesley , the first Earl of Anglesey. Susanna left her father's Church at the age of 13 and joined the Church of England .

On November 11, 1688, she married Samuel Wesley . Samuel was 26 years old at the time, Susanna 19 years old.

Wesley was the mother of 19 children, nine of whom died in infancy. When Susanna Wesley died, only eight of her children were still alive.

Susanna Wesley took care of the upbringing of her children: She taught them six hours a day. They learned the Lord's Prayer as soon as they could talk. They learned to read at the age of five and began the day with a chapter of the Bible and a psalm , followed by grammar , math , history , geography , authors such as John Milton and William Shakespeare , all following a learning method developed by Susanna Wesley. The girls were given the same lessons as the boys, and John's sister was able to read the Greek New Testament by the age of eight . In addition, Susanna paid great attention to discipline and decent behavior.
