Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Anglesey ( July 10, 1614 - April 6, 1686 ) was an Anglo-Irish nobleman. After a brief stint as President of the English Council of State and Treasurer of the Navy , he served as Lord Seal Keeper under Charles II between 1673 and 1682 .

Family and relatives

He was related to the Puritan pastor Samuel Annesley and thus also to his daughter Susanna Wesley (née Annesley) and John and Charles Wesley , the co-founders of the Methodists .

In 1660 he inherited from his father Francis Annesley, 1st Viscount Valentia (1583-1660) whose Irish nobility title Viscount Valentia . In 1661 he was also awarded the English nobility titles Earl of Anglesey and Baron Annesley .

Annesley married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James Altham of Oxey. The couple had seven sons and six daughters.
