Samuel Annesley

Samuel Annesley (* 1620 in Kellingworth near Warwick , Central England ; † December 31, 1696 ) was an English Anglican Puritan pastor. He was best known for his Morning Excercises , a collection of sermons .

Life

Annesley was born to John Aneley. He was related to Arthur Annesley , the first Earl of Anglesey. 1635 he was appointed studies at Queens College of the University of Oxford approved, where he earned his BA and MA.

On July 26, 1648, he preached before the House of Commons and in the same year he received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University. In 1657 he was appointed lecturer for St Paul’s .

Samuel Annesley had a large family (25 children). One daughter, Elizabeth, married John Dunton. Another, Susanna , became the wife of Samuel Wesley and the mother of John and Charles Wesley .

He died on December 31, 1696. His funeral sermon was given by Daniel Williams and Daniel Defoe wrote a lament on the occasion of his death. He was buried in the cemetery of St Leonhard's Church in Shoreditch , London.

Works

His works consisted of several sermons, which were published separately. He also brought out a collection of sermons under the title Morning Excersises and wrote various biographies, the best known of which dealt with the life of the spiritual Thomas Brand.
