Shoreditch
Location of Shoreditch in Greater London
|
Shoreditch is a district in Hackney in north-east London . It went administratively together with Hackney and Stoke Newington (parts of the former County of London ) in 1965 in the new district of Hackney .
Shoreditch has long been one of the poorer areas of London. Since the late 20th century it has been considered a “trendy district”, whose dilapidated houses have been refurbished to a high standard and in which the London avant-garde from design, art and fashion as well as the press found new habitats. The Reuters news agency has a branch there. The once dodgy pub scene turned into well-tended trendy restaurants. The former town hall became a venue for training courses, weddings and banquets. Shoreditch is thus subject to an almost complete gentrification .
The closest London Underground station is Old Street ; Until its closure in June 2006, the Shoreditch station was also in the district. Shoreditch High Street is also the name of a newly built station on the East London Line . However, this is in Tower Hamlets .
