Old Street Station
Old Street is a train station on the border of the boroughs of London Borough of Hackney and London Borough of Islington , just north of the City of London . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1, at the intersection of Old Street and City Road. On the one hand, subways of the London Underground stop here on the Northern Line , on the other hand suburban trains from First Capital Connect on the Northern City Line . In 2011, 21.04 million underground passengers used the station, plus 1.435 million rail passengers.
On the surface there has been no actual station building since the construction of a roundabout . Access to the platforms is via ramps and stairs from the basement of a small shopping center. During the 1990s, the acidic soil meant that part of the cast-iron Northern Line tunnel south of Old Street had to be replaced with new stainless steel segments while still in operation .
The station was opened on November 17, 1901 by the City and South London Railway (predecessor of the Northern Line). On February 14, 1904, the platforms of the Northern City Line followed, which was also part of the underground network from 1913 onwards. In order to expand the capacity, the platforms of the Northern Line were closed from August 8, 1922 to April 20, 1924 in order to enlarge the tunnel profile. On October 4, 1975, the Northern City Line station was closed to convert it for rail operations. From August 16, 1976 on trains operated by British Rail , since its privatization and until March 31, 2006 those operated by WAGN .
