Essex Road is an underground train station in the London borough of Canonbury , which is part of the London Borough of Islington . It is on the Northern City Line in the Travelcard tariff zone 2, at the intersection of the main roads Essex Road, Canonbury Road and New North Road. It is the only train station in London in a deep tunnel, in which no underground trains stop. Instead, First Capital Connect local trains run . Like all stations on the Northern City Line, Essex Road is closed on weekends. In 2013, 0.521 million passengers used the station.

history

The station was opened on February 14, 1904 by the Great Northern & City Railway (GN&CR), on the largely underground connection between Finsbury Park and Moorgate . The new route was to be used by express and suburban trains of the Great Northern Railway on a direct route to the City of London , which is why the clearance profile of the tunnel tube was significantly wider than that of the subways. From 1913 to 1933 the line was part of the Metropolitan Line , after the nationalization an independently operated branch of the Northern Line .

On October 4, 1975, the line was temporarily closed and transferred to the state railway company British Rail , which made some modifications. On August 8, 1976, Essex Road station reopened, and exactly three months later the entire line between Finsbury Park and Moorgate. After the privatization of British Rail in 1994, West Anglia Great Northern WAGN took over the operation and First Capital Connect has been responsible since April 1, 2006.
