Three different railway lines intersect on two levels. The first level consists of a North London Line (NLL) station. This railway line operated by London Overground runs in an east-west direction and circles the center of London as a half-ring line. It is also the north end of the East London Line . The second level is a few meters below the A1 trunk road . The Northern City Line (NCL) runs here in a north-south direction and is served Monday to Friday by First Capital Connect suburban trains (operations are closed on weekends). The Victoria Line , a London Underground line, runs parallel to the Northern City Line .

history

Highbury & Islington Station was created from the merger of two previous stations. The first was on the site of today's station building. Built in 1872 by the North London Railway , it was an impressive neo-Gothic building with right of way for horse-drawn carriages. The route had existed since 1850, but had previously only been used by freight trains that were traveling from Docklands to Birmingham .

On the opposite side of Holloway Road was the second station of the Great Northern & City Railway (GN&CR), on the route between Finsbury Park and Moorgate . The station was opened on June 28, 1904, around four and a half months after the line went into operation. This route, later referred to as the Northern City Line , was acquired by the Metropolitan Railway in 1913 and operated as part of the Northern Line from 1933 .

On June 27, 1944, a German V1 cruise missile destroyed most of the NLR station, only a few elements remained. The current one-story building was built in the 1960s as part of the construction of the Victoria Line. After the installation of escalators, the GN&CR building was closed. After a renovation in 2006, it houses signaling devices for the subway.

The opening of the first section of the Victoria Line took place on September 1, 1968. Highbury & Islington was the southern terminus for a short time before the line was extended further towards the city center on Warren Street on December 1 of the same year . The subway service on the Northern City Line ended on October 4, 1975 to allow the station to be rebuilt (construction of two new platforms). British Rail took over the route and resumed operations on August 16, 1976. After the privatization of British Rail in 1994, WAGN took over the operation of the local trains, and First Capital Connect has been responsible for them since April 1, 2006.

On November 11, 2007, Transport for London took over the services previously provided by Silverlink on the North London Line and has been operating them under the name London Overground ever since. Since March 2011, Highbury & Islington has been the northern terminus of the extended East London Railway , which is also operated as part of London Overground. As part of the preparation for the overground, this part was also made barrier-free.
