Shoreditch is a closed station on the London Underground in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . Originally opened as a station on the East London Railway, it was later the northern terminus of the East London Line for a long time . The stop was near Brick Lane in a cut that had meanwhile been filled in. The station building at the intersection of Pedley Street and Code Street has been preserved to this day.

history

The station opened in 1876 and was on the East London Railway, on the trains of several companies operated. In 1885 passenger traffic between Liverpool Street and Shoreditch ceased. From March 31, 1913, the Metropolitan Railway (predecessor of the Metropolitan Line ) operated on the section to the south. Since the partial closure of a connecting curve at Whitechapel in 1941, the East London Line was operationally independent.

The line at Shoreditch consisted of a single track that ran along the disused freight yard Bishopsgate . Until 1966 there was a connecting track north of the station to the main railway line, which ends in Liverpool Street Central Station; this connection was clearly visible from the end of the platform for a long time.

Between March 25, 1995 and March 25, 1998, the entire line was closed to all traffic due to renovation and modernization work.

On June 9, 2006, Shoreditch Station was closed. It was replaced by the nearby Shoreditch High Street station. The line, which has been extended at both ends, has been part of the London Overground network since June 2010 . The station building is under monument protection (Grade II Listed). The platform, including superstructures and exits, was demolished and the cut-out was filled in to make room for the new railway viaduct to Shoreditch High Street station.

The station building was auctioned in February 2011, with a minimum bid of £ 180,000, the final price being £ 665,000. It is planned to set up a hall for art exhibitions and similar events there. The facade has now been covered with a large mural.

Shoreditch on the East London Line

The number of passengers declined steadily over the years of operation, so that Shoreditch was one of the least-used underground stations in London with around 1,100 passengers a day.

Most recently there were only limited opening times: Mondays to Fridays in rush hour from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 7:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. due to the Brick Lane Markets. The station was closed all day on Saturdays. The rest of the time, Whitechapel was the northern terminus of the East London Line.
