“The deliberately ambitious portrait of a difficult personality who attributes the star's shortcomings to the lifelong conflict with his father. A detailed biopic that deals largely with surface phenomena and whose thoroughly committed actors are left in the lurch by the script and direction, so that Dean's personality is ultimately not more understandable. "
