Valentina Cervi (born April 13, 1976 in Rome ) is an Italian actress .

Life

Cervi is the daughter of the director Tonino Cervi and the producer Marina Gefter . Her grandfather was Gino Cervi , who is best known in German-speaking countries for his role as communist mayor Peppone in the film adaptations of Don Camillo and Peppone in the 1950s and 1960s .

Although little Valentina was often allowed to accompany her father to the set, she initially had no ambitions to get into the film business. Rather, she was drawn to the mysteries of the Church and saw her future rather behind the walls of a monastery. At the age of ten she made her first appearance in Carlo Cotti's Portami la luna . However, her views on the film changed abruptly when she started working as a production assistant at the age of 17 in order to make some money for herself. She studied the directing method of Konstantin Sergejewitsch Stanislawski . At the age of 20 she began to deal with the work of her grandfather.

She has worked with numerous international directors, such as Jane Campion ( Portrait of a Lady ), Mike Figgis ( Hotel ) and Peter Greenaway ( The Tulse Luper Suitcases ). Her greatest success so far was in the title role of the film Artemisia , directed by Agnès Merlet . The film is based on the life story of the Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentileschi . In 2005 she was seen with the film Provincia Meccanica at the Berlinale. In 2006 she was a member of the jury for the best debut film at the Berlinale. In the ZDF four-part series War and Peace based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy , which was broadcast in January 2008, Cervi played the role of Princess Marja Bolkonskaja. In 2012, Cervi appeared in the HBO series True Blood , in which she played the lead role of Salome.
