Life

Cervi was the son of the theater critic Antonio Cervi , who first appeared as a stage actor in 1924, a year after the death of his father . He developed into one of the most popular theater actors in Italy. He found his first engagement in the troupe around Alda Borelli , after which he often changed and developed into the first leading actor, where he had founded his own company from 1935 together with Sergio Tofano and Evi Maltagliati . Cervi drove his stage career with great success up to the beginning of the 1960s.

In 1932 he had his first screen appearance in the film L'Armata azzurra . He became world-famous through three films by Italian director Alessandro Blasetti : Aldebaran (1935), Storms over Morreale ( Ettore Fieramosca , 1938) and The Mysterious Avenger ( Un 'Avventura di Salvator Rosa , 1940). After the Second World War , its popularity was boosted by the then new medium of television . In his first television roles he played the detective Jules Maigret based on the crime novels by Georges Simenon .

In addition to the Don Camillo films (1952-1965) he also appeared in the Italian-French political satire The Man with the Sash (1962) together with Fernandel, in which he also played a mayor, but this time a fascist .

Shortly after Fernandel died while filming the sixth Don Camillo film in 1971, Cervi retired from the film business. In 1974 he died of a pulmonary infarction . Gino Cervi found his final resting place on the Cimitero Flaminio in Rome .
