action

In the small town of Brescello in the Po Valley , the seemingly endless guerrilla war between the Catholic village pastor Don Camillo and Mayor Giuseppe Bottazzi, known as Peppone , is beginning a new round. This time it's all about electing a member of the Italian Parliament . Peppone is running for the Communist Party he represents . Don Camillo regards this as anything but benevolent and sabotages the election campaign as much as possible.

In addition, however, the two have other disputes with each other. First of all, for his candidacy, Peppone needs proof of an elementary school qualification , which he never obtained. When he had difficulties solving a task in the exam, Don Camillo of all people helped him.

This has already been forgotten again when shortly afterwards Peppone refuses to have a courtyard evacuated where one of his comrades lives. This farm was bought by a farmer and Don Camillo then quartered him with his wife, child and animals in front of the town hall. The whole thing ultimately leads to a failed attempt by Peppone to blow up a bridge. Don Camillo prevents this and finally helps his adversary to remove a hidden tank, an M24 Chaffee from the Second World War . It turns out that it was precisely because of this tank that Peppone's change of ownership was to be prevented.

Shortly afterwards, Don Camillo ridiculed Peppone at an election rally by defacing a banner with his likeness. Peppone's revenge is not long in coming: he has Don Camillo's chickens steal and slaughter. Since he was seen in the parish garden at the time in question, it was mistakenly assumed that he was the chicken thief. So he comes to court, where Don Camillo appears again as a savior and gives his opponent an alibi. However, this only ensures relaxation for a short time.

Finally, Don Camillo, as a clergyman, has to mediate between the Bottazzi couple, as Peppone's wife suspects her husband of infidelity. Clotilde Mari , a supporter of the Communist Party and Peppone's secretary, seems to have done it to him, but Peppone remembers his duties as a husband. With the help of Don Camillo, he can finally find his wife again and soothe her.

In the end, Peppone wins the election and becomes a member of his party. But this means the end of his term of office as mayor and the farewell to his homeland. On the day of his departure for Rome he is celebrated by his comrades on the one hand, and on the other hand, u. a. despised by his wife. Don Camillo, who watches the train at the next station, finally brings Peppone to his senses by arguing that he should consider what he is leaving behind. So Peppone gets off the train and follows Don Camillo back to the village and his previous life ...

criticism

"A lot of enjoyable slapstick and a pinch of ideological reason in a folk comedy that lacks the subtle humor of the previous films."
