Paolo Stoppa

Paolo Stoppa (born June 16, 1906 in Rome , Italy , † May 1, 1988 in Rome, Italy) was an Italian actor .

Life

Stoppa completed a classical actor training and appeared on stage from 1927. He became one of the most famous and successful character actors of his generation in Italy. From 1932, Stoppa also appeared in movies. There he was often cast for rogue roles. With the director Luchino Visconti he continued the collaboration he had already begun in his stage work in several films. He played a power-hungry mayor in Visconti's The Leopard from 1963. Vittorio de Sica also secured his collaboration for several of his films, for example for The Miracle of Milan . Directed by Sergio Leone , he played a coachman in Play Me a Song of Death in 1968 . His list of works includes almost 170 titles.

Since the beginning of his career, Stoppa was also active as a voice actor; in the 1970s he played increasingly for television.

During his first time at the Teatro Eliseo in Rome, which lasted from 1938 to 1940, he met his future wife, the actress Rina Morelli . After her death in 1976 he concentrated almost exclusively on the stage again.

Stoppa was awarded the Italian film prize Nastro d'Argento in 1982 for his role in The maddened pranks of the Marchese del Grillo .
