Rina Morelli (born December 6, 1908 in Naples , † July 17, 1976 in Rome ) was an Italian theater and film actress.

life and career

At the age of seven, Rina Morelli, the daughter of stage actors, made her stage debut in Paolo Giacometti's play Morte Civile . From 1938 she worked at the Teatro Eliseo in Rome, where she met her future husband Paolo Stoppa . After the end of the Second World War , the couple began a long and fruitful collaboration with the director Luchino Visconti . Performing modern plays together like Tennessee Williams ' Endstation Sehnsucht , where Morelli played the fragile Blanche DuBois, made Rina Morelli one of the most respected character actresses of her generation in Italy.

Morelli made her film debut in 1939 with Gino Cervi in the adventure flick The Cavalier in the Mask . Compared to the theater, where she regularly got leading roles, her film career was of secondary importance. She is probably best known for her three cinema roles under Visconti's direction: she played governess Laura in Sehnsucht (1954) , in The Leopard (1963) she embodied the strictly Catholic wife of Burt Lancaster , and in her last film, Die Innschuld (1976 ) she was seen as the mother of Giancarlo Giannini . Her appearances in The Leopard (1963) and The Murri Affair (1974) earned her nominations for the Nastro d'Argento for Best Supporting Actress . In 1971 she was seen on Italian television as Ida Jungmann in an adaptation of Buddenbrooks , on which her husband also participated. Morelli was also a busy spokesperson for Italian dubbed versions , including as regular spokesperson for Judy Holliday and Lizabeth Scott .

Rina Morelli died in July 1976 at the age of 67, leaving behind her husband Paolo Stoppa.
