Giancarlo Giannini (born August 1, 1942 in La Spezia ) is an Italian actor .

life and career

Giannini, son of a naval officer, spent his childhood in Naples . After earning a degree in electrical engineering, he attended Accademia d'Arte Drammatica , but did not complete it, as theater director Beppe Menegatti wanted Giannini to work under all circumstances for his staging of the Midsummer Night's Dream . With this play began an extraordinary career on the stage, for television and in film, where he made his acting debut in the short film Fango sulla metropolis in 1965.

Until the end of the 1970s, he played in numerous successful and artistically remarkable films in his home country. He worked particularly frequently with Lina Wertmüller , for example on her internationally acclaimed films Entranced by an Unusual Fate in the Azure Sea in August (1974) and Seven Beauties (1975). He also stood in front of the camera for Luchino Visconti in his last film The Innocence in the male lead. Giannini's great television successes were David Copperfield in 1965 and E le stelle stanno a guardare in 1971 . In 1986 Giannini turned to film direction for the first and last time: Ternosecco was a grotesque staged in the style of Wertmüller.

After concentrating particularly on dubbing in the 1980s , but also playing in foreign productions (such as by Rainer Werner Fassbinder , Rick Rosenthal and Douglas Hickox ), it was used internationally in the following decade and can look back on an astonishing number of works . Among the international roles that of the inspector Pazzi in the film Hannibal (2001) and his appearances as the French secret agent "René Mathis" in the James Bond films Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008) were those that Giannini also in made known to a younger audience. His list of works now includes almost 140 roles, including in television series towards the end of the 2000s.

Giannini was married to screenwriter and director Livia Giampalmo from 1967 to 1975 . From this marriage he is the father of two sons: Lorenzo (* 1967; † 1987) and Adriano (* 1971), who is also an actor. In 1983 he married fellow actor Eurilla del Bono and also has two children with her.

At the 1973 Cannes Film Festival , Giannini received the Acting Award for his role in Lina Wertmüller's film Love and Anarchy . For his role in the movie Seven Beauties (1975) he was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Actor .

In 1973, 1974, 1999 and 2001 the Nastro d'Argento went to Giannini; 1972, 1984 and 2004 a David di Donatello .
