action
In the distant future, humanity has colonized space, noble houses are fighting for power. The noble Duke Leto Atreides is given feudal rule over the desert planet Arrakis, called "Dune", by Emperor Shaddam IV. This desolate world holds tremendous wealth, because only here can the " spice " be obtained, a mind-expanding drug that is essential for interstellar space travel in the Empire.
But Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, whose race has been enemies with the Atreides for eons, forges sinister plans to destroy Leto and his family and regain control of Arrakis. With the help of the emperor, who has no male heir and fears the steadily growing popularity of his cousin, the Harkonnen overrun the defense of the duke, who at the same time was defeated by a traitor, his personal physician Dr. Yueh, is incapacitated. However, the latter also gives him the opportunity to take revenge on the baron with an artificial poison gas tooth. Only his advisor Piter De Vries falls victim to this.
Although the baron's plan works for the most part and the duke dies, Leto's Bene Gesserit concubine Jessica and his son Paul escape into the wilderness of the Arrakis polar region. After they found a new home with the enigmatic Fremen, the inhabitants of the desert , the young son of the duke, under the supervision of his protector Stilgar, grows into a powerful opponent for the Harkonnens and the Emperor: he and his mother teach the Fremen the arts the Bene Gesserit and build it into a massive army that makes the Harkonnens and the Imperator restless with surprise attacks and attacks. Jessica gives birth to Paul's supernaturally gifted sister Alia, while he himself takes the beautiful stranger Chani as a mate. Paul realizes with horror that the Baron Harkonnen is his biological grandfather. His mother, Lady Jessica, had been secretly born to the Baron's daughter. However, this was withheld from him, so that he knew nothing about his daughter. Paul realizes that in some areas he has similar behavior patterns as his grandfather.
Eventually, the Emperor, Baron Harkonnen himself, and the other big houses with a huge army gather on Arrakis to take control of the spice production. At this moment Paul, now known as the Fremen Messiah Muad'Dib, blows an attack: with nuclear weapons and dozens of sandworms he attacks the capital Arakeen. Alia lets herself be captured and kills her grandfather, the Baron Wladimir Harkonnen, with the nerve agent of a "Gom-Jabbar".
Paul arrests Shaddam IV and, with the support of the Fremen, claims the throne of the universe. After a final duel with Feyd-Rautha, the baron's failed nephew, he agrees to marry Shaddam's daughter, Princess Irulan, and becomes the new emperor. While his Fremen armies set out to conquer the universe, he remains loyal to his only true love, the concubine Chani. She, his mother says, would one day call the story his wife.

Reviews
Lexicon of international film
"Dialogue-heavy, theatrically staged television mini-series that suffers from its under-budgeted equipment and bad special effects."
Cinema
- Part 1: “The saga, long awaited by fans, disappoints: too many staff, too little tension. Some of the dialogues are involuntarily weird, and lead actor Alec Newman lacks the necessary charisma. Close to the original, nicely to trashy and yet far too lame. "
- Part 2: “The 40 million marks in production costs are badly distributed unfairly: Part two mostly takes place in front of painted dunes, a bitter waste against the technical level of the first part. Maybe these scenes were just removed from the shorter US version? What remains is pathetic talk without highlights. "
- Part 3: "With the exception of Uwe Ochsenknecht, who, as Fremen leader Stilgar, muffles the camera with an eternally grumpy face, the actors in the sterile backdrops act as if they were playing" Beverly Hills, 90210 "with false texts and costumes."
Groupings and terms
For a more detailed understanding of the different groups, people and terms, see:
Others
- To date, no other in-house production on the SciFi Channel has surpassed Dune's audience ratings .
- Actress Alice Krige was originally slated to be Lady Jessica, but was replaced by Saskia Reeves . In the sequel Children of Dune ( 2003 ), Krige actually took on the role.
- Character actor Ian McNeice received high praise for his successful portrayal of the greasy-scheming Baron Wladimir Harkonnen.
- In the USA, the original version was cut because some people in charge considered it too violent and the portion / presentation of some of the nude scenes as “indecent”.
- The German version is based on the uncut US version. There is also a so-called "Director's Edition" which runs approx. 6 minutes longer. So far this is only available in the USA on DVD (released by Artisan or now Lions Gate Entertainment ).
- In 2001 a computer game adaptation of the miniseries of the same name was released, see: Frank Herbert's Dune .
German publication
In Germany, the first Dune miniseries was broadcast on ProSieben , while RTL secured the rights to the sequel . Since then there have been several repetitions of the two trilogies on RTL, and the first mini-series has been cut into an entire feature film on DVD .
