Arrakis

The desert planet Arrakis or "Dune" is the planet on which spice is produced. The native inhabitants of Arrakis are the Fremen , descendants of wandering Zensunni slaves. Arrakis is the most valuable planet in the universe, as this is the only place where the spice can be mined. Initially, Arrakis is a desolate desert planet with no large vegetation or wildlife. The sandworms, which did not originally come from Arrakis, were introduced and gradually transformed the entire planet into a huge desert through absorption of water in their sand trout stage. Through the transformation that had been set in motion by Paul Atreides and by his son Leto Atreides II (the god emperor), Arrakis turned into a beautiful, almost arable and livable planet with a good harvest and countless inhabitants. In addition, oceans and forests are created. For the large sandworms, however, the transformation turned out to be toxic and extremely dangerous, so that they almost become extinct, with the exception of a few specimens that are in imperial care. After the god-emperor dies after his 3,500-year reign, his body falls into the Idaho River and triggers a chemical chain reaction that slowly causes Arrakis to gradually turn back into a sandy desert world. Thousands of years later, the honored Matres decide to finally bring the spice production (on which they are not dependent) to a standstill, as they are in a war against the Bene Gesserit and Bene Tleilaxu. The honored Matres attack the surface of Dune with a new type of weapon, which destroys all life on Dune and leaves large parts of the surface glazed (because the sand has melted under the extreme heat). However, the Bene Gesserit manage to save a sandworm and bring it to the Chapterhouse planet, where they gradually begin to terraform the planet into a second desert planet in order to be able to continue harvesting spices. When the machines, under the leadership of Omnius, in The Redeemer of the Desert Planet are at a massive war with humanity, Arrakis is still uninhabitable.

Since a large part of eleven of the twelve novels of the Dune cycles is set on Arrakis, various locations are known on Arrakis.

Sietch Tabr

The sietch of Stilgar's tribe hidden in the mountains, also called “Stilgar's Sietch”. This is where Paul Atreides and his mother find shelter after being driven out by the Harkonnen.

Arrakeen

The capital of the desert planet, usually called Arrakis City in ancient times , is the main trading center and seat of the respective ruling family. The city is comparatively small, it is more of a large village than a real city. The city is enclosed by the Schildwall, a huge mountain range that was partially destroyed by nuclear weapons during the Fremen uprising under Paul Atreides .

Carthag

Capital of Arrakis at the time of the Harkonnen rule. Administrative headquarters built by the Harkonnen for the exploitation of the spice. Like Arrakeen, enclosed by the shield wall.

South Pole

The South Pole is water dealers and spice - smugglers used as a base. The Fremen also run a botanical testing station in the region (in the Early Chronicles ).

Caladan / Dan

The Caladan water world, the third planet in the Delta Pavonis system, lives mainly from fishing and the export of pundi rice. After the supreme warlord of the League of Nobles, Vorian Atreides, met his great love in this world and started a family, his house later received the planet as a fief and ruled there for 26 generations. Later, Lady Jessica Atreides received the planet as a gift from her son, the Fremen Emperor Paul Muad'dib, and spent her retirement there.

Chapterhouse, the Ordensburg

The order castle is the last refuge of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood in the order castle of the desert planet . After the Honored Matres have destroyed all worlds of the sisterhood as well as the desert planet Rakis, the order castle is the last bastion of the Bene Gesserit. With the help of the last sandworm on the planet Rakis, the order castle is gradually being converted into a new desert planet to ensure the continuation of the melange.

During the time of Butler's Jihad, the order castle was called Parmentier. On this planet, Raquella Berto-Anirul , a granddaughter of Vorian Atreides, and Mohandas Suk are researching a cure for the deadly plague that has attacked one planet after another. The ruins of the hospital are still standing at the time when the order castle was transformed into a desert.

Corrin

Corrin was the last of the Synchronized Worlds on which the computer universal spirit Omnius ruled and enslaved the people living there. After the League of Nobles had conquered or destroyed all other machine planets , a tough trench war took place in the orbit of Corrin for many years, which finally ended with the Battle of Corrin , in which Omnius supposedly destroyed and the foundation stone for the new human empire was laid.

Faykan Butler changed his family's name to Corrino in memory of that battle .

The earth

As the homeworld of humanity, the earth is the throne world of the Old Empire for a long time until Omnius established his machine rule there. For a millennium, the Terra-Omnius is the authoritative incarnation of the artificial collective consciousness of the thinking machines, until the death of Manion Butler at the hand of the independent robot Erasmus turns people against the machines and Butler's jihad triggers.

A little later, Xavier Harkonnen leads a retaliatory expedition against Earth, in which every machine and all life on the surface of the planet is wiped out in a nuclear bombardment. After that, the earth will be absolutely uninhabitable for many thousands of years and just a contaminated wasteland. During the reign of the god-emperor Leto Atreides II, however, thanks to the help of the empire, the earth recovered quite a bit and apparently has a moderate climate again and some indigenous animal and plant species. However, it remains unclear whether the earth is still partially contaminated with radioactivity, or whether people have settled again in the meantime. The Orange Catholic Bible was also written on earth and is considered one of the most important scriptures throughout the Empire.

Giedi Prime / Gammu

Giedi Prime (in the German translation Giedi Primus ) is a planet of the star 36 Ophiuchi B and was one of the main worlds of the League of Nobles and later went as a fief to the resurgent House of Harkonnen. From here, Baron Wladimir Harkonnen planned the destruction of the house of Atreides, which he hated. The planet is described as dark and rather cool, and there are also hardly any native animal and plant species, which is probably due to the poor solar radiation.

After the reign of the god-emperor Leto II. Giedi Primus is only called Gammu, this name was invented by Gurney Halleck in order to erase the last trace of the Harkonnens.

Harko City

Also: the baronate or barony. Capital of the House of Harkonnen on their home planet Giedi Primus . The city has a spaceport .

Ginaz

The water planet Ginaz, with its sporadic archipelagos , is the home of sword masters and the seat of their master school. He is ruled by the Council of Swordsmen. Ginaz was neither part of the League of Nobles, nor is it an official part of the Empire. Since the services of the swordmasters were too valuable for the nobles to risk, they were never incorporated.

IX

IX (pronounced "IX") is the planet of technicians. The residents of IX are called Ixians . The name IX comes from the fact that it is the ninth planet in the associated solar system. In the early chronicles , we learn that the rulers of IX came from the House of Vernius , which is allied with the House of Atreides . After Graf Dominik Vernius had been killed by the detonation of a Steinbrenner during a Sardaukar attack, Prince Rhombur was severely injured in the assassination attempt on Leto Atreides I and his sister Kailea suicide committed, the house Vernius was considered extinct. By rescuing genetic material from Tyros Reffa (son of Elrood Corrino and his concubine Shando, later Dominik Vernius' wife), it was possible for Tessia, the wife of Prince Rhombur, to give birth to Prince Bronso, a legitimate heir of the House of Vernius. However, he was gradually ousted by a group of rich industrialists and finally gave up his rule. The guild highliners, the guild's gigantic folding spaceships, are built on IX. There has always been a lively trade relationship between the Raumgilde and the Ixians. The Raumgilde is, along with the Empire, one of IX's best customers: countless new spaceships are commissioned every year, and the navigators demand more comfort and better technology with each new model. Among other things, the Ixians are considered trustworthy business people. But they also disregard the laws and prohibitions of Butler's Jihad, which forbid high technology and artificial intelligence.

Kaitain

After the devastation of Salusa Secundus, the seat of the emperor and the other organs of the empire is built on Kaitain . Kaitain is described as extraordinarily beautiful, with wonderful architecture and colorful nature. The emperor resided in a palace where he ruled in lavish splendor. After Paul Atreides became Emperor and Arrakis took the place of Kaitain as Emperor's seat, the Corrino family retreated to their original home planet Salusa Secundus . Kaitain was devastated in the course of the Jihad and fell into insignificance.

Paul Atreides was born on Kaitain according to the early chronicles (Volume 3: House Corrino).

In the film The Desert Planet , Kaitain is depicted as an earth-like planet that also has a ring system (like the rings of Saturn) in orbit.

Lankiveil

The cold fringes of Lankiveil was the exile of House Harkonnen after it was cast out of the Empire in the wake of Abulurd Harkonnen's betrayal at the Battle of Corrin . The hatred of the house of Atreides developed among the sons of Abulurd, which was to remain decisive for the politics of their family for eons.

Lankiveil's main exports are Biondax whale pelts.

Poritrin

Poritrin drew much of its economic strength from keeping millions of Zensunni slaves . The planet, which was under the rule of the House of Bludd, produced various technologies and instruments, including some prototypes of Tio Holtzman's inventions .

Later parts of the planet were ravaged by a revolt by the Zensunni and Zenschiite slaves, who were lynched by the angry population for this. Only 101 Zensunni managed to escape with a folding spaceship prototype.

Richese

Richese, once a synchronized world that then fell to the Titans and later joined the Human Empire, is one of the main technology suppliers of the Known Universe. As competitors of the Ixians, like the Ixians, they are eyed with suspicion by the inhabitants of other worlds. But they are not considered to be as innovative as the Ixians, nor do their goods have the same quality. IX also often accuses them of copying their inventions, which is also true. Count Ilban Richese ruled the planet with his house during the reign of Shaddam IV.

Ilban Richese is the grandfather of Leto I. Atreides through his daughter Helena .

corona

Richese had a moon called Korona, on which there were test sites for illegal experiments and secret Spice stores. When he found out, Emperor Shaddam IV had the moon destroyed with nuclear weapons in 10.175. About a quarter of Richese residents lost their sight in the flash of the explosions. However, some of those affected were given new eyes by a politically motivated relief effort by the Tleilaxu. In exchange for this, the Tleilaxu “requested” (read demanded) certain technologies and ships.

Rossak

At the time of Butler's Jihad, the forest planet Rossak is the home of the Sorceresses of Rossak, who, under the guidance of Zufa Cenva, learn their mental destructive powers used in the fight against Omnius. Rossak is also home to Norma Cenva and Aurelius Venport . Rossak is a source of innumerable poisons and drugs. Because of this, it is also Venport who is the first to see the potential of the spice as a commodity, even if he has no idea what it will bring to the universe. The population on Rossak always remains almost the same, as firstly many children are born dead or crippled due to environmental toxins (although there is one sorceress for every 9 unsuccessful births) and secondly, the planet is only habitable in the oxygen-rich deep valleys overgrown by the Rossak jungle are. The planet has extremely strong volcanic activity and is constantly changing. It is no longer mentioned in the later volumes; it is unclear whether it is still inhabited.

Raquella Berto-Anirul , granddaughter of Vorian Atreides , founds the sisterhood of Bene Gesserit on Rossak . Their genetic breeding program goes back to an idea of the Sorceresses von Rossak.

Salusa Secundus

Salusa Secundus is the third planet of the star Gamma Waiping and the home planet of the house Butler / Corinno. It was first the capital of the League of Nobles and later of the Empire. After Salusa Secundus became radioactive from a fallen house and became increasingly desert-like, the Empire's government was relocated to Kaitain , and Salusa Secundus was turned into a prison planet. The Sardaukar were later recruited from the prisoners .

Emperor Shaddam IV moved there with his friend Hasimir Fenring and their four younger daughters after his fall.

The capital of Salusa Secundus is Zimia. A famous export product of the planet are the Salusan bulls, a highly bred and aggressive breed of cattle used for bullfighting by various planets, including Caladan .

Tleilax

Tleilax, formerly Tlulax, is a planet in the Thalim system and home to the Bene Tleilax (later Tleilaxu). The inhabitants of the planet are strictly religious and do not allow visits, and when they do, visitors are strictly limited to the area around the spaceport. Tleilax was destroyed by the Honored Matres, but Scytale, a master of the Tleilaxu, was able to save himself, who implanted a capsule with the genetic code of all Tleilaxu in his chest. The planet is also the place of origin of the gholas and the cultured replacement organs. Before the success of their organ banks, the residents, then still known as Tlulaxa, butchered captured Zensunni and Zenschiites as well as other settlers from peripheral plants, which earned them the ostracism of the League of Nobles and the subsequent empire.

Gelding IX

Wallach IX is originally a Synchronized World ravaged by the League of Nobles. Thousands of years later, the Bene Gesserit's mother school is located here .

Zanovar

The fringes of Zanovar, fiefdom of the Taligari family in the early chronicles, hoarded a not inconsiderable amount of spice during the reign of Shaddam IV and was devastated by Sardaukar troops as punishment for this violation of the emperor's laws, the entire population was killed But the reason was Tyros Reffa, the half-brother of Shaddam and thus a theoretical competitor for the throne). In the legends this world was called Zanbar.

Individual evidence

  1. Earth
  2. Giedi Prime
