action
Dune - The Messiah
Twelve years have passed since Paul Muad'Dib ascended the throne and set out with his Fremen armies to conquer the universe ; from the desert planet Arrakis, the emperor rules over all the worlds in the sky, controls the spice production and ensures that the other big houses do not become too powerful. While Paul's lover, the imperial concubine Chani , tries in vain to get pregnant, his sister Alia and the high priest Korba crush all attempts by the other houses to enforce more democracy in the empire.
After Chani found out that Paul's main wife Irulan was using a poison to prevent her from becoming pregnant, she confronted her and began a strict Fremen diet. Meanwhile, the emperor welcomes the new ambassador of the spacemen's guild to Arrakis, without realizing that the guild has forged a secret plan with Irulan's sister, Princess Wensicia Corrino, to murder him: They have a ghola, a genetic replica, of Paul's closest friend Duncan Idaho and give it to him as a gift. Using a secret code word, this ghola is supposed to be induced to kill the emperor.
When an old follower of Muad'Dibs asks him to meet him, he immediately sets off and is blinded in the streets of the capital by a stone burner, a nuclear weapon. But thanks to his genetically developed abilities, the emperor can still see. Meanwhile, Alia, who is plagued by nightmares , and the ghola, who unexpectedly remembers his previous life as Duncan Idaho, grow closer. Princess Wensicia and the guild kidnap a sandworm and smuggle it to the Corrino homeworld Salusa Secundus to build a new Spice cycle there.
Chani returns from her cure to take care of Paul and soon becomes pregnant. The pregnancy is problematic, however, so that the emperor and his concubine retreat to their old home Sietch Tabr. While Chani is falling, Alia starts a bloody and ruthless campaign of revenge against the enemies of the empire; Korba and the guild ambassador Edrik are executed as well as the venerable mother of Bene Gesserit and other traitors.
When Chani dies giving birth to twins Leto and Ghanima, Paul's eyesight fades in desperation. A shapeshifter from the Tleilaxu people has smuggled himself into the court and is now threatening the lives of the children - he offers a pact with the Tleilaxu and wants to make Paul a ghola of Chani. The Duncan ghola and Paul, who for a short time can see through the eyes of his fully conscious son, can overwhelm the being and save the children. Then the emperor goes out alone into the desert, as the old law requires of a blind Fremen.
Threat to the Empire
Almost sixteen years have passed since Muad'Dib's disappearance; the Imperial Regent Alia, meanwhile married to Duncan Idaho, rules the universe on behalf of her brother's children, Leto II and Ghanima. The iron hardness with which she goes to work ensures more and more unrest in the empire, which is still being fomented by the House of Corrino under Wensicia and their spy, the priest Javid.
The children Leto and Ghani, raised by Irulan, are approaching the age of majority, but are only moderately interested in the power games of their aunt, who is drifting more and more into madness, and look forward to seeing their grandmother, Lady Jessica, again. Alia, on the other hand, blames her mother for her own mental problems and is seduced by the genetic legacy of her grandfather, Baron Wladimir Harkonnen, into overriding the empire with a reign of terror .
The children flee from the capital and are attacked by a pair of Laza tigers who remotely control the opponents of the Atreids with neuroimplants. With the last of his strength, Leto can push his sister into a crevice before facing the tigers to fight.
The children of the desert planet
Ghanima wakes up from a swoon and finds the Laza Tiger dead - and apparently Leto too; she drags herself to the next settlement and can get to safety in Sietch Tabr. However, Alia forces Stilgar to surrender her niece, whereas Irulan strongly opposes. Leto is now well and unites in the middle of the desert with the sandworm nestlings, who merge with him and form a second skin on his arm.
Lady Jessica flees with other rebels from Arrakis and finds accommodation in the Corrino house, where she teaches Wensicia's son, Prince Farad'n, the arts of the Bene Gesserit. Meanwhile Leto meets a blind preacher in the desert, in whom he believes he recognizes his father. The two hike to the Fremen and smuggler rebels in the desert, where they meet Gurney Halleck.
Madness fueled by Alias Javid, a civil war breaks out on Arrakis, which can only be ended by Ghanima's marriage to the heir of the House of Corrino. Farad'n is supposed to bring his house back to power, but surprises his mother by revealing the murder plan against the children on his arrival. Wensicia is arrested while Ghanima gives Farad'n freedom.
The blind preacher comes to the capital and wants to preach against Alia again, but is murdered by a fanatic. Only when he dies does he reveal himself as Paul. Duncan is also killed after stabbing Javid in the Sietch Tabr, whereupon Stilgar kills him according to the Fremen tradition to wash away the shame of the murder.
When the marriage of Farad'n and Ghanima is to be announced in the regent's palace , Leto steps in. His mutation has begun, he is stronger than ever and faces Alia for a duel. His aunt is defeated and finally finds the strength to escape the control of Baron Harkonnen and to free herself from the influence of her ancestor through suicide . Most recently, Ghanima followed Leto's change with Farad'n. She foresees his long journey of suffering as the god-emperor of the desert planet and pities her brother for the difficult task.

criticism
The lexicon of international films described Children of Dune as an “elaborately designed science fiction mini-series with numerous secondary threads and plots and an exuberant arsenal of people. The production, generated with many (computer) effects, presents a popular salvation story full of Christian imagery for a large audience. "
Remarks
- Many of the actors from the first miniseries resumed their roles in Children of Dune , but some were unavailable. Thus, Saskia Reeves (Lady Jessica) by Alice Krige replaced Uwe Ochsenknecht (Stilgar) by Steven Berkoff and James Watson (Duncan Idaho) by Edward Atterton . Karel Dobry (Liet Kynes) is there again, but this time in the role of Korba.
- Even Ian McNeice returned as a ghost of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen back to his granddaughter Alia that it has killed several years ago to punish.
- Certain key aspects of the book were changed or not brought up in the film:
in the book the Bene Gesserit, Leto and Ghanima plan to have a child in order to keep the Atreiden bloodline pure; the siblings actually marry in the end, but without fathering common offspring. The children in the book are actually still children (9-10 years old) and not teenagers . The character of Wensicia Corrino underwent a fundamental change in the film adaptation: in the novel she is only a marginal figure, in the film she plays an important role as the architect of the conspiracy against the house of Atreides. In addition, Wensicia is the younger sister of Princess Irulan in Herbert's work, while she is clearly the older in the film adaptation, which is due to the clumsy choice of actresses (Susan Sarandon / Julie Cox). In the film itself, Irulan is referred to as the firstborn of Emperor Shaddam IV.
German publication
In Germany, where the first miniseries ran on ProSieben , Children of Dune appeared on RTL under the title Dune - The Trilogy . Since this title was misleading and the second trilogy did not stand out from the first, the English original title was chosen for the German DVD release that followed shortly afterwards . The three individual parts were each about 90 minutes long.
A two-part version was shown on the pay-TV premiere , also under the title Children of Dune . Each part was only 90 minutes long, so large parts were cut.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack for Children of Dune , composed by Brian Tyler , became a bestseller after its release, which coincided with the DVD release of the miniseries. The album consists of 36 tracks, including Inama Nushif ('She is eternal'), which was written entirely in the fictional foreign language Chakobsa by Tyler and sung by Azam Ali , a singer of Iranian descent living in Canada.
