Dune (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dune is an adventure game with strategic elements, the plot of which is loosely based on the science fiction novel The Desert Planet by Frank Herbert . The computer game was developed by Cryo Interactive Entertainment in 1992 and distributed by Virgin Interactive .

In the same year, Westwood's Dune II - Battle for Arrakis was released , but it is not a direct successor.

The game

The computer game Dune is a mixture of strategy game and adventure game and is heavily influenced by David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of The Desert Planet . The player takes on the role of the young Paul Atreides , who was sent with his family by the galactic emperor to the desert planet Arrakis to promote the mining of spice (in German: spice or, in the novels and films, also called melange ), which needed for interstellar travel. Paul receives the first instructions from his father, until he does not return from a retaliatory attack against a Harkonnen fort. After that, the action is continued by other people. In the course of the game, the player must ally himself with the local Fremen in order to be able to fight the Harkonnen. In return, the Fremen can be helped to make the desert planet more habitable through planting. The aim of the game is to drive the Harkonnen from Arrakis and to uncover a large conspiracy.

The game is very close to the novel or David Lynch's film adaptation: For example, Paul finds his great love Chani among the Fremen and reveals the secret of the gigantic sandworms .

The background music of the game, composed by Stéphane Picq , which also appeared as a soundtrack under the name Dune: Spice Opera , was perceived as particularly striking . Picq called himself Exxos in this context, in memory of the early days of Cryo.

The game first appeared in 1992 on floppy disks for MS-DOS and for the Amiga . A CD-ROM version with extended music, voice output and cutscenes from David Lynch's movie was released in 1993 for MS-DOS. This was followed by an implementation for Sega Mega-CD .
