So close to heaven (Original title: A Walk in the Clouds ) is an American film drama from 1995. It is based on the plot of the Italian film classic Lie a Summer Night from 1942, which has been heavily modified. Directed by the Mexican Alfonso Arau . When it came to the criticism, Dem Himmel fell through as boring and cheesy.

action

After returning from World War II , Soldier Paul Sutton struggles with reintegration. He meets the pregnant Victoria Aragón, whom he offers to introduce himself to her father as the husband and father of the child. The Aragón family owns a winery in Napa Valley , where an ancestor of the family brought vines from Mexico . Sutton takes part in the life of the winegrowers and falls in love with Victoria, although her father remains suspicious of him. An argument ensues in which Victoria's father throws an oil lamp, which lights the vines. The whole plantation is destroyed despite attempts to save it. Paul does not give up, but runs to the oldest, somewhat remote vine, from which the whole plantation descends. In fact, their roots have survived and are used to build the plantation a second time.

criticism

The film critics regretted “well-known clichés” and the lack of captivating twists and turns, calling Dem Himmel so near a film without charm, but with a lot of sentimentality, or a “pure test tube product”. The story is often involuntarily funny. The beautifully trimmed landscape shots with an abundance of light or with “a lot of setting sunlight” were also mentioned.

The week criticized the film as "pathetic" and the portrayal of Keanu Reeves as "uninspired". The Mexican Alfonso Arau subordinated himself to the laws of the market when he switched to Hollywood, the film service found. epd Film saw the potential for an entertaining situation comedy being wasted because the creators had higher things in mind: "We shouldn't laugh, we should be moved." The result was a moral piece. The Fischer Film Almanach recommended the film only for "friends of tearful dialogues, luxuriantly pathetic music and purple sunsets".

Awards

Maurice Jarre won the Golden Globe Award for film music . Keanu Reeves and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón were nominated for the MTV Movie Award . Keanu Reeves was also nominated for the negative Golden Raspberry Award.
