Don Camillo ei giovani d'oggi was to be the sixth part of the Don Camillo and Peppone film series with Fernandel and Gino Cervi . The basis was the novel Don Camillo and the Redhead by Giovanni Guareschi . Due to the illness of the main actor Fernandel (Don Camillo), the film remained unfinished.

The shooting and Fernandel's health problems

The recording under the direction of Christian-Jaque began in 1970. The first problems occurred in mid-July. While filming a scene in which Fernandel should have been carrying Graziella Granata in his arms, it turned out that he was unable to pick her up. On July 29th, he went to Parma to see a specialist; Diagnosis: lung cancer. The director assured Fernandel that filming would resume as soon as he recovered. In August 1970 the recordings were therefore interrupted, Fernandel went to Marseille and Gino Cervi returned to Rome . In mid-January 1971 Fernandel phoned Christian-Jaque to report that his health had improved and that he could be counted on. In the meantime, the production company had already decided to recast the main roles and to completely re-shoot the film with director Mario Camerini (Jaque and Cervi had refused to continue without Fernandel, who died on February 26, 1971). The film Don Camillo and the red-haired girl then appeared in 1972 in color and with Gastone Moschin as Don Camillo and Lionel Stander as Peppone. However, he could not build on the success of his predecessors.

Voices on the film

Even after several decades, opinions regarding the unfinished film from 1970 differ. Some sources report that only a few scenes had been shot, others claim that only a few shots were missing and that the film could in any case have been completed and distributed, especially in view of the numerous fans of the series.

Consisting of 5 DVDs existing French Complete Edition contains as bonus features an interview with Fernandel from 1 August 1970 by the set in which he confirmed that "we are finished on 15 September if all goes well."

On the other hand, one also reads: "This last film remained unfinished because of the death of Fernandel, which happened when about 20 scenes were missing to the end."
