Fernand Joseph Désiré Contandin (born May 8, 1903 in Marseille , † February 26, 1971 in Paris ) was a French actor and singer who was known by the stage name Fernandel . He gained fame especially in his role as Don Camillo in the Don Camillo and Peppone films .

Life

origin

Both parents appeared as an entertainer in vaudeville - music theaters of the turn of the century on, the father Denis Contandin under the stage name Sined . Fernand was already on stage as a child. As a teenager he kept himself afloat with odd jobs in order to later complete an apprenticeship as a banker . But at the age of 21 he returned to the roots of his family. From then on, he performed as a singer in the cafes of his hometown. Two of his three siblings also chose the artistic career , his brother Francis under the name Fransined and the brother Marcel as Marcel Sined .

In 1925 he married Henriette Félicie Manse, with whom he had three children. The mother-in-law created the stage name Fernandel by calling him Fernand d'elle (German: "Ihr Fernand").

From singer to film

In 1928 Fernandel moved to Paris , where he soon appeared in numerous revues and operettas . Two years later he made his debut in a film by Marc Allégret . He achieved his breakthrough in 1932 with The Tugendjüngling of Madame Husson . In France he was one of the most popular film and stage actors and singers during the 1940s. He mostly played the leading role in his 125 films.

In German-speaking countries, he is mainly known for five Don Camillo films that were shot based on the books by Giovanni Guareschi . Guareschi had a say in the filming and selected Fernandel. Fernandel was critically acclaimed for his portrayal of Don Camillo and received various awards, including the Nastro d'Argento .

In the 1954 turned Le Mouton à cinq pattes in which he represents quintuplets, the centennial celebration of her father - he also represents - are ordered, a little jab comes to the Don - Camillo prior films. Fernandel died of lung cancer late in the evening on February 26, 1971 in Paris while filming a sixth Don Camillo film . He was buried on the Cimetière de Passy in Paris .

Her marriage to Henriette Félicie Manse in 1925 resulted in three children:

  • Franck (1935-2011). Franck Fernandel , as he was called, was a chanson composer, singer and actor known in France and Canada.

Fernandel's grandson Vincent (* 1983), a son of Franck, works as an actor and presenter in Paris.
