Ernest le rebelle is a French adventure comedy from 1938. The strip with elements of Western films based on the novel by Jacques Perret by director Christian-Jaque with Fernandel in the lead role was not shown in the German-speaking area.
action
Ernest Pic is an accordionist on a cruise ship to South America. Wealthy passenger Suzanne Gringue misinterprets his seasickness-induced facial expressions as an interest in her person, which leads to an argument with her husband. During a stay on shore, a performance by a native dancer stops Ernest, so that the ship continues without him.
Desperate Ernest lets Tonio recruit him for a banana consortium and finds himself a half-enslaved worker in Mariposa; in Demosthenes he finds a fellow sufferer. Ernest tells of the incidents on the plantation of the owner, who turns out to be Emmanuel Gringue, the husband of the lady on the ship. Suzanne tries to protect Ernest, but Gringue keeps providing the governor of the area, a drunken tyrant, with workers from his plantation as soldiers so he can do his business in peace; so now Ernest becomes a member of the Navy.
Ernest learns to swim, but is unable to overcome his seasickness and nausea knocks the admiral down, which brings him an indictment, the result of which is a death sentence. In his cell he finds his accordion, the sounds of which delight the governor's ear. However, after a short period of freedom, he ends up in the cell again because the admiral is found shot. Demosthenes frees Ernest and arrives at a rebel group, of which he becomes leader. The rebels can then take out the governor, Tonio and Gringue; Ernest will spend the future in freedom with Suzanne.
criticism
Jean Sicilier writes in Télérama: “ Ernest le rebelle is one of the best of Christian-Jaques' six films with Fernandel, which he made between 1936 and 1938. The film benefits from the power of its literary origins. His unbridled comedy, which never denies the original work, finds appropriate expression in Fernandel's comic abilities. "
Remarks
The film was shot in the Nice region . The two film songs "Ernestito" and "Ma Créole" by Casimir Oberfeld and Jean Manse are interpreted by the main actor.
