Giorgio Orsoni (born August 29, 1946 in Venice ) is an Italian lawyer and was Mayor of Venice from April 2010 to June 13, 2014.

Life

University of Venice

In 1972 Orsoni became a lawyer and professor of administrative law at the University of Venice , Università Ca 'Foscari, where he is also the Scientific Director of the Masters in Environmental Law .

Airport, legal advisor to the Ministry of Public Works

In addition to his activities as a lawyer and director in various professional bodies, from 1997 to 2003 he was President of SAVE Engineering SpA , an engineering company at Marco Polo Airport on the mainland of Venice. From 1996 to 1998 he worked as a legal advisor to the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministerio dei Lavori Pubblici .

Cultural and political activity

From 2000 to 2003 he was advisor to the administration of the Biennale . Since 2005 he has been President of the Compagnia della Vela , one of the long-established rowing companies, which is a great honor in Venice. Currently (2010) he is Primo Procuratore di San Marco and Vice President of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini , a cultural foundation based on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore .

After the first term of office of Mayor Massimo Cacciari , which ended in 2000, he became assessore al Patrimonio and was also responsible for institutional relations in the municipality.

Supported by the agency for political communication Ideeventure , he won the elections for mayor of Venice with a center-left coalition against the candidate of Prime Minister Berlusconi . In the election he won 75,403 votes, which corresponded to a share of 51.13 percent. His opponent Renato Brunetta received exactly 42.6% of the vote with 62,833. As of April 8, 2010, Orsoni was thus Sindaco . In addition to numerous other functions, he also assumed the presidency of the La Fenice Foundation by virtue of his office . From September 2010, Orsoni worked in a working group with cities in northeastern Italy to run for European Capital of Culture in 2019 .

Orsoni's voters mostly live on the mainland. Around 70% of his voters were recruited from there, around 10% live on the islands, the rest in the Centro storico, the old town district of Venice.

Suspicion of corruption, resignation and acquittal (2014-2018)

On June 4, 2014, he was arrested on suspicion of corruption and placed under house arrest until June 12, 2014, like 35 other politicians and entrepreneurs who were suspected in this bribery scandal in connection with the flood protection measures ( MO.SE project ). He resigned on June 13, 2014, followed by 24 city councilors on June 23. Since July 3, 2014, Vittorio Zappalorto has been Commissario straordinario del Comune di Venezia . In the 2015 elections, entrepreneur Luigi Brugnaro was chosen as his successor. Orsoni was acquitted of the allegation of illegal party funding in September 2017.
