Peter A. Bruck

Peter A. Bruck (born October 8, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian communications scientist, lawyer and company founder. He is the overall scientific director and managing director of Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft (RSA FG). In 2012 he founded the spin-off KnowledgeFox GmbH and was the sole managing director there until the end of 2016, and since 2017 Bruck has been co-managing director together with a media manager of the Bonnier media group. At the International Center for New Media in Salzburg, Bruck fulfills the function of honorary president. He is also Chairman of the Board of the European Academy of Digital Media-EADiM , Netherlands, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Summit Award as part of the United Nations process of the World Summit on the Information Society ( WSIS ).

Life

Studies

Peter A. Bruck studied law, social sciences and economics at the University of Vienna and graduated as Dr. jur. As a Fulbright Scholar , Bruck graduated with a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Iowa , USA. A Ph.D. in Communication at McGill University , Montreal as a Graduate Studies and Humanities Fellow followed in 1984. The 440-page doctoral thesis was entitled Power Format Radio. A Study of Canadian Current Affairs Radio .

Professorships in Canada and Austria

From 1982 to 1992 Bruck worked as Professor of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. It was there that Bruck was also Director of the Center for Communication, Culture and Society, Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences. From 1990 to 1995 Bruck was a temporary professor for journalism and communication science at the University of Salzburg , and from 1994 to 1998 director of the Institute for Information Economics and New Media. From 1995 to 1997, Bruck was the founding academic director of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (formerly Techno-Z University of Applied Sciences) as well as the founder and scientific director of the Techno-Z University of Applied Sciences Research & Development Company (from 2000 Salzburg Research Research Company).

Bruck is currently Honorary Professor for Information Economics and New Technologies at the Institute for Economics at the University of Salzburg and Adjunct Research Professor in Communications at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.

Research manager and company founder

Bruck worked as head of the Interactive Media business unit at Jet2Web Internet Services GmbH in the Telekom Austria AG group and Chief Content Officer of Telekom Austria from 2001 to 2002. From 2002 to 2008 he was overall director of Research Studios Austria in the Austrian Research Centers group GmbH - ARC. Since it was outsourced in April 2008, Bruck has been managing director and overall scientific director of Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft mbH.

Bruck is the initiator of the Austrian State Prize for Multimedia and eBusiness (since 1997) and the head of the EUROPRIX Multimedia Awards (since 1998), the European competition for the best multimedia content. Bruck was chairman of the Council of Europe Committee on Media Diversity in Europe (2002 to 2007) and a member of the United Nations' highest advisory body on information and communication technologies ( UN ICT Task Force ) in New York, as well as the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (since 2006 ).

Bruck has also been CEO of the micro-learning company KnowledgeFox, based in Vienna and Salzburg, since 2012, organizes a series of micro-learning conferences and drives research in the field of shareable content, the semi-automation of content creation and social micro-learning.

Media research from tabloid formats to micro-learning

Peter A. Bruck's research interests focus on the development of new communication technologies and information structures and the resulting changes in business processes, economy, culture and society. An early focus of Bruck was on the import of Anglo-American theory strands into European communication studies (ethnomethodology, cultural studies, theory of orality, etc.) and their application to tabloid media. With research on the Kronen Zeitung, Bruck reoriented journalism. Since 1995, Bruck has devoted himself increasingly to the economic analysis of multimedia, digital media and the Internet. Research in the field of micro- learning, mobile learning in the context of digital media, return on investment in education and micro- learning & gamification has been a focus for several years .

The microlearning startup KnowledgeFox, co-founded by Peter A. Bruck in 2012, was taken over in 2017 by the Bonnier media group, which has since been the new majority owner. New research focuses in the field of micro-learning are currently crowd-sourced learning and semi-automated content creation.
