Me and the Cow (OT: La vache et le prisonnier ) is a French - Italian feature film from 1959 . Directed by Henri Verneuil .

action

In 1942 , the French prisoner of war Charles Bailly, who is stationed on a farm in Bavaria with three comrades (one of whom writes), fled back to France with a cow named Marguerite. He experienced numerous adventures in Germany, which was hit by World War II, met Russian prisoners of war who offered him civilian clothes for his cow, other French prisoners of war disguised as German soldiers, and a German peasant family who feared for their son who, it turns out, is stationed as a soldier in Charles' hometown of Marseille, of all places. Charles is struggling to make progress due to blown bridges. Shortly before the border, he has to leave his cow tied to a tree. When he arrives at the Lunéville train station , he decides to make his way through as a stowaway on a train to the south of France. However, he is tracked down at the train station by two French police officers. On the run from them, he jumps onto a train that is about to leave and its destination is Berlin . At the end of the film, it is shown that Charles is coming back to France two years later.

production

The story is based on a true story that the writer Jacques Antoine processed in his novel.

The film was shot in Upper Bavaria , including on the market square in Neubeuert (deleted scene), and in Esslingen am Neckar . The film structures were designed by Franz Bi .

The French original version lasts 118 minutes, in the German version around 20 minutes have been cut, including the scenes in which SS officers and German tanks are shown.

The premiere was in France on December 16, 1959, in Germany the film was first released on May 17, 1960, and in Italy on March 16, 1960.

Reviews

“Amusing comedy with a profound note, for which Fernandel's character is responsible. A little more speed would not have harmed the episodic film. "
