action

Antoine Espérandieu (in the German version: Anton Fürchtegott) travels to the United States to visit his old friend Jules Lavisse and to avoid a number of problems in his French homeland, mainly caused by his constant "appetite" for women. finally arrived in the so-called gorge of the widows, however, he has to learn that Lavisse has become a victim of the area terrorizing "Dynamite Jack". At first quite fearless and impressed by the seven widows of his ex-compatriot, who has become a Mormon, Espérandieu stays in the area, but immediately gets an example of the cruelty of that "Dynamite Jack", who is the brother of a Pegeen O'Brien on the street shoots. At the local hotel owned by the owner Dolores, he was thrown out almost immediately because he made beautiful eyes on the Indian maid belonging to the bartender Fred. Since he is allowed to stay one more time, he tries his hand at gold digging - just like Lavisse did before - but returns without precious metal, but with all kinds of wounds. When he fantasizes about a duel in his hospital bed, the old sheriff Scotty unceremoniously turns him into a tax collector; the previous ones had all failed miserably.

Espérandieu also comes into the saloon in tatters on the evening of the first "working day", but has enough humor to face the - he did not recognize - "Dynamite Jack" to play poker. The card game is interrupted by Pegeen, who has been brushed for revenge, and both men find it difficult to escape into a barn. Because the outlaw had assured the cheeky Frenchman that he would recognize him at the next best opportunity and shoot him, he shaved off his goatee. With the striking consequence that he now resembles the "Dynamite Jack" like one egg to another. From then on, the residents of the municipality always run wild when he turns up, and collecting taxes becomes child's play. However, the real evil is not idle; Espérandieu escapes an attack only because Dolores - who thinks he is her outlaw lover - helps him. His escape leads the French to a remote hut hiding place belonging to the gang, who also arrive there a little later, but first have to settle internal disputes with the result that the dissatisfied Henri is given deadly lead. Only with a lot of luck and the naivete of the other henchman Louis le Borgne does Espérandieu escape; again he is hidden by Dolores. A cavalry sergeant who has arrived in the meantime can clear up the mistake about the two doppelgangers, because "Dynamit Jack" has a striking symbol on the forearm for the blood brotherhood that has entered into with the Indian member of his gang, which the French obviously lack.

That in turn leads to the next error, because now the population believes that the monster has finally bitten into the grass; Espérandieu encourages them in this belief. What causes the sergeant to leave the supposedly pacified place. Knowing that his vertigo will probably soon be discovered, Espérandieu wants to join him, but the busy Scotty had meanwhile buried his travel essentials outside the city. While digging there, the real "Dynamite Jack" appears in the saloon, where he is celebrated, honored with a bonus of 10,000 dollars and also promoted to the new sheriff. The disaster takes its course when the cowardly French refuses Scotty's instructions to leave the ravine with a stagecoach as quickly as possible. He faces the gangster without having the slightest chance. When Louis accidentally kills Louis, the tide turns; the rest is taken care of by Scotty, who had been inactive until then and who does the killing of his likeness for the now ammunitionless Espérandieu. In the end, Pegeen wants the new hero as a husband, but is outpaced by the angry Dolores, who publicly declares that she has been "dishonored" by Espérandieu - she drags the surprised person into church for immediate marriage. The French see a possible way out in the hope of becoming a Mormon too.

criticism

“Weak Wild West parody with Fernandel in a double role as a gangster and a harmless prospector. The few sparkling gags fizzle out ineffectively when the film is idle. "

TVGuide describes the film as "very uncomfortable despite Fernandel" .
