Historicism of the Belle Époque

The turn of the century is generally understood to be the period of a few years in which one century passes into the next.

In the narrower sense, it is the leap of an epoch itself, but there are two perspectives:

  • Strictly speaking, the jump includes the turn of the year around the years with the last digits 00 and 01 (see year zero ).
  • For the general public, the change in the hundred digit from the year '99 to the year '00 represents the turn of the century. That is why it was last celebrated around the world in countries or by people using the Gregorian calendar at the turn of the year 1999/2000.

In particular, at the turn of the century, the change from the 19th to the 20th century , i.e. especially the years 1896 to 1910, meant the fin de siècle . It was the Belle Époque in Europe , a time with strong political and social changes in the years before the First World War  - and at the same time very distinctive styles in architecture , literature and art . Because of the cultural turning point around 1914, it is called the long nineteenth century .

The term millennium is often used for the last turn of the century from the 20th to the 21st century .
