Maurice Labro (born September 21, 1910 in Courbevoie ; † March 23, 1987 in Paris ) was a French film director and screenwriter who directed over 25 films and television series in France between 1947 and 1972.

life and career

Born in 1910 in the French city of Courbevoie in the Hauts-de-Seine department , northwest of Paris, Labro became interested in film at a very early age, starting in 1933 and 1934 as an assistant director to the former silent film director Pierre Weill (1906–1961) and later to director Marcel Lestan, but only made his feature film debut at the age of 37.

The crime thriller " Spürhunde " (Les Gosses mènent l'enquête) (also daring game) based on a novel by Francis Didelot was highly praised by critics in 1947.

Reviews

"Very good individual performances by the young actors and very precise portrayal of the boarding school environment make the film humorous and exciting."

reception

In 1950, the actor Louis de Funès found a very tolerant director in Maurice Labro. In the comedy, Louis plays the gangster Gino together with Christian Duvaleix in Labro's film "Le roi du bla-bla-bla" with Roger Nicolas in the lead role. However, the two do not attract attention because of their acting talent, but because they constantly interrupt the shooting with their silliness. Roger Nicolas once remarked after the shooting: Quote: " You will never find another leading actor who allows two buffoons to pull off their number ." Quote from the book "Louis de Funès: the German biography", page 58, by Pierre Steinhauer, 2003

Young actors start their films

Many international actors owe their entry into the film business to the French director. Like Jess Hahn , for example , a French stage and film actor of American origin. He made his debut with Maurice Labro in 1953 in (Deux de l'escadrille) . Best known since his leading role in Eric Rohmers In the Sign of the Lion (1959).

Films in German distribution

In Germany, work with actors like Fernandel in comedies such as In Certain Nights and Loud Corpses in Las Vegas based on the novel by Carter Brown or the two Lino Ventura thrillers Spione (1956) and Das Raubtierrechnet (1958) are among his best-known films .

Furthermore, Labro worked with well-known actors such as Robert Hossein , Virna Lisi and Roger Hanin . For the most important of his films, which were also distributed in Germany, he usually wrote the scripts himself. As a competent craftsman and confident route man, he skilfully led through almost all film productions: including comedies, dramas, crime and spy films, but also literary films such as Die Kanaille with Marina Vlady or The Seven Masks of Judoka with Heinz Drache in the lead role.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Labro withdrew from the film business. He died in Paris on March 23, 1987 at the age of 76.
