Virna Lisi ; actually Virna Lisa Pieralisi (born September 8, 1936 in Ancona , † December 18, 2014 in Rome ), was an Italian actress .

Life

Lisi began her film career in 1953 with the film E Napoli Canta . She studied law and worked as a pianist, but continued to devote herself fully to her work for film. Until 1963 she shot exclusively in her home country. The first Hollywood films followed in 1964 , starring Frank Sinatra (Assault on the Queen Mary) , Jack Lemmon (How do you kill your wife?) And Tony Curtis (Stay away from my wife) . At the end of the 1960s Lisi returned to Italy and was mainly filming there again. Later, with film dramas such as Liliana Cavani's Beyond Good and Evil (1978), Alberto Lattuada's La Cicala (1980) and Luigi Comencini's Gino & Elvira - Alte Liebe nicht rostet (1989), she got more and more character roles for which she received praise from the received Italian criticism and won several awards in her homeland. One of her greatest successes is the role of Catherine de Medici in Patrice Chéreau's historical drama The Bartholomew Night (1994), for which she was awarded both the French César film prize and the actor's prize at the 1994 Cannes film festival .

In 2009 Lisi received a David di Donatello for her life's work. After a month of serious illness, she died in Rome on December 18, 2014 at the age of 78.
