Romulus and Remus is a mythological adventure film by Sergio Corbucci from 1961 based on the legend of the same name . In Germany, the film was released in theaters on January 18, 1963. An alternative title is Duel of the Titans .
action
The king of Alba Longa has been murdered; his daughter, high priestess Rhea, puts the twins she had born in a basket. Both are found and suckled by a she-wolf; a shepherd finds the toddlers and raises them. When they grew up to be men, they learned of their royal descent, went to their homeland and were able to kill the usurper Amulio, a Latin man who sits on the throne. They leave the city to rubble and ashes and their people wander through the wilderness in search of a new home until they stop on a plain where the new city is to be built.
The brothers fight over Julia, Princess of the Sabines; Remus challenges Romulus - both are sons of Mars - to a duel, which the gods decide by means of a lightning bolt that throws Remus down. Romulus is now in charge of the construction work on the new city named after him.
criticism
Variety magazine hit hard with the film, which in their view of "dramatic primitivities, technically sloppy and yawning boring" is. She found him "pretty lame for a quarter ton of talent". Even the lexicon of international films is not very enthusiastic: “Serially produced" muscle-and-sandals "cinema full of naive show values”. The Nuovo Spettatore Cinematografico noted the "many variations that the authors' fertile imaginations add to the story".
Remarks
An uncut version was released on DVD by Koch Media in 2006 .
