Luigi Comencini

Luigi Comencini (born June 8, 1916 in Salò , † April 6, 2007 in Rome ) was an Italian film director .

Live and act

Comencini spent his childhood and youth in Paris. Back in Italy in the 1930s, he first studied architecture in Milan and was artistically close to the fascists. He came to film after the war, initially as a critic.

Comencini has worked with some of the most famous Italian actors such as Gina Lollobrigida , Sophia Loren , Silvana Mangano , Giulietta Masina , Claudia Cardinale , Monica Vitti or Vittorio de Sica , Enrico Maria Salerno Vittorio Gassman , Marcello Mastroianni , Alberto Sordi and Totò . He made several films in the tradition of neorealism and directed the commercially successful entertainment films Liebe, Brot und Phantasie as well as Liebe, Brot und Jifersucht with Vittorio de Sica and Gina Lollobrigida as well as the first German-language film adaptation of Heidi .

His later films were often international co-productions with international actors, often from France ( Jacqueline Bisset , Gérard Depardieu , Annie Girardot , Maria Schneider , Michel Serrault , Jean-Louis Trintignant ), but also from German-speaking countries - Mario Adorf , Senta Berger , Elke Sommer - or Hollywood ( Lionel Stander , Bette Davis , Joseph Cotten ).

In addition to his directorial work, Comencini was also active as a screenwriter and film critic . He was one of the founders of the Cineteca Italiana film archive .

Comencini's daughters are also active in the film business: Paola Comencini works as a costume designer , production designer and art director , Francesca and Cristina Comencini are film directors. Cristina Comencini's film La bestia nel cuore was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006.
