Love, Bread and Jealousy ( Pane, amore e gelosia ) is the second part of the film series "Liebe, Brot und ..." from 1954, which began with bread, love and fantasy (1953) and with love, bread and a thousand kisses (1955) and Pan, amore e Andalucia (1958) found two sequels. The romantic comedy, like its predecessor, which was successful with the audience, was staged by Luigi Comencini , with Gina Lollobrigida and Vittorio De Sica in the leading roles.

Antonio is a police mareschiallo in an Italian village, in his early fifties and has a reputation for being a charmer. Spring is in his heart as he is in love with Annarella and intends to marry her. Because she has an illegitimate child, he dictates to his colleague Baiocchi a request for dismissal to his command: Unfortunately, such family relationships are not compatible with the office of a Mareschiallo. Annarella prevents him from sending the letter. She lets her little son come to the village for the first time and wants to make sure that Antonio gets on well with him; In addition, the child's father has reported. A second marriage is in the making between the young farmer Maria and the young carabiniere Pietro. Because the regulations forbid working in a place where an official has a fiancée, Pietro is posted to another place for twenty months. Before leaving, he entrusts Maria to his father's colleague Antonio. Maria is upset about this, because something seems to have happened between her and Antonio.

In order to weave a trousseau for her marriage, Maria needs new thread. This time the village trader refuses her credit and instead makes her an indecent offer, which she indignantly refuses. Her bad reputation troubles her, which has arisen because many men are after her. So she immediately takes on a job as a domestic help with Antonio, whose old housekeeper Caramella suddenly falls ill. Rumors are circulating in the village that Caramella wants to set up Antonio and Maria. The gossip also reaches Pietro in the other village. At a dance event there is a fiery dance by Antonio and Maria. Both Annarella and Pietro witness. The young carabiniere breaks his engagement to Maria and returns to the village for duty. Meanwhile, Antonio fights over Annarella, who doubts their relationship, especially since the relationship between Antonio and the boy is hostile. Maria, lost in perspective, finds a small job with a traveling troupe that is visiting the village, where she sweeps away the dirt with a broom. As soon as she is on stage, Don Nicola, the impresario , becomes aware of her talent and wants to turn her into a soubrette . She is given a beautiful dress and is supposed to perform the next evening. Before that, her mother sends Antonio to the group that Maria is supposed to have "bewitched" to get the minor out of there. But on site, Antonio learns that Maria is already 21 years old. She throws herself up to him, but he can just barely resist her. Annarella says goodbye to Antonio; she leaves the village with her son and his father, a forest policeman. In the evening, before the performance, an earthquake shook the village. Nobody is injured, but Maria's poor farmhouse has collapsed, her donkey is injured. Pietro cannot bring himself to give the animal the coup de grace and leaves it to the Baiocchi. Some time later, Maria sets out too; she got a job in the city. Antonio stays behind alone, but soon a new, unattached midwife comes to the village with whom he is hooking up.

criticism

According to Luigi Chiarini in 1957 , the "carefully staged" film is not a betrayal of neorealism, but a beautiful, non-vulgar show that offers one and a half hours of carefree entertainment .
