Carlo Montuori (1935)

Carlo Montuori (born August 3, 1885 in Casacalenda , Italy ; † March 4, 1968 in Rome , ibid) was an Italian cameraman with a film career spanning around half a century as a picture designer.

Life

Bicycle thieves , photographed by Carlo Montuori

Montuori was trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and at the Polytechnic of Milan and after graduating worked as a photographer in his Italian homeland and in Switzerland. In 1907 he joined the as yet undeveloped cinematography of his country and learned everything about film photography from his teacher, the film camera pioneer Luca Comerio . Montuori got his first major job from the Milanese production company Milano Films. Immediately before the outbreak of World War I , Carlo Montuori was appointed chief cameraman. In the beginning Montuori often cooperated with Augusto Genina, a specialist in monumental epics. Later, in the mid-1920s, he was one of several cameramen involved in the additional recordings of Fred Niblo's epic Ben Hur , which was filmed in Rome . During the Mussolini era, Montuori worked with a number of directors from the Telefoni Bianchi cinema, most notably Gennaro Righelli . “Montuori's elegantly lacquered pictures were supposed to convey the illusion of a luxurious world of the beautiful and the rich, of the voluminous boudoirs and silk salons; They also indulged - with historical fabrics - in the splendor of bygone eras ”, without their creator Montuori engaging too intensely in the regime's flawless fascism film propaganda in those years.

At the end of the war in 1945, Montuori's oeuvre initially seemed to be mediocre, but soon some talented, younger directors such as Luigi Zampa , for the Montuori a. a. turned the realistic family story "Critical Years" to secure his cooperation. "With his gritty, held in sober documentary style photography to bicycle thieves , the masterpiece of Vittorio de Sica and simultaneously showpiece of Italian neo-realism ' For the 63 year old veteran was able to make up much of its playful in the Mussolini-time reputation." His camera work on bicycle thieves , he was Awarded the silver ribbon in 1949 . Montuori's later work with de Sica as an actor (“ In the Sign of Venus ”) or as a director ( Das Dach ) could not keep up with this performance. Most recently, Carlo Montuori only photographed cinematic entertainment routine with directors such as Stefano Vanzina , Luigi Comencini , Dino Risi and Lucio Fulci before he retired at almost 80 years of age.

His son Mario Montuori also worked as a cameraman.
