Alberto Sordi (born June 15, 1920 in Rome , † February 24, 2003 ibid) was an Italian film, television and theater actor as well as director , screenwriter and voice actor .

Life

As a child of a musical family - his father was a music professor - Sordi started with the theater in elementary school, initially with the production of puppet pieces. He also sang in the choir of the Sistine Chapel. He had to give up the Milan drama academy after a short time due to his Roman dialect.

Back in Rome, Sordi began working as an extra in Cinecittà in 1937 and soon became voice actor for Oliver Hardy , Robert Mitchum and Anthony Quinn . He also worked at the theater and as a radio play speaker.

Sordi mainly appeared in comic roles. He became famous for his collaboration with Federico Fellini , in whose films Die Bittere Liebe (1952), Die Loafers (1953) he played leading roles. He was successful with the role of Amedeo, who was looking for extramarital love adventures, in Gian Luigi Polidoro's comedy Amore in Stockholm , which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Actor . This was followed by the role of the wealthy break pilot Count Emilio Ponticelli in the English-language production The daredevil men in their flying boxes (1965).

Sordi appeared as an actor in over 150 film and television productions. At the 1995 Venice Film Festival he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. After his death at the age of 82, the popular actor's coffin was laid out in Rome's City Hall.

The Galleria Alberto Sordi in Rome bears his name.
