action
The end of World War II in Italy is imminent. It's a long and hot summer in Rome. Ciro, the son of a night watchman, hangs around the streets with his friends all day. In the Colosseum they get to know the homeless Geppa, who has set up a makeshift home there and now joins the clique. They often go swimming in the Marrana, a canal and its surrounding swamps. Ciro got some new shoes from his father, but he loses them when the boys are on the run from the police guarding the area around the canal.
Ciro doesn't dare to go home without the shoes. He and his friends desperately try to find the shoes. They also don't shy away from theft. Geppa, although innocent, is caught and ends up in jail. His neighbor Iris, who has been secretly in love with Ciro for a long time, caught the whole scene. She uses the household money to buy Ciro's shoes. However, he thinks Geppa has got them. Iris lets him believe this.
During an amateur boxing match, Ciro learns from his opponent who really paid for the shoes. Ciro wants to confront Iris, but falls in love with her and moves into her small apartment. The clique is now active with crooked deals on the black market. After initial hesitation and despite protests from Iris, Ciro also takes part.
The war is over, Ciro's mother has died and Iris takes over the household role. Ciro starts an affair with married Tosca and continues to hang around. After a violent argument with Iris, he promises her to look for a job and they also want to marry. Through Geppa, Iris learns that Ciro is participating in a break-in in a tire warehouse. Iris can persuade him to get out at the scene. Ciro's father, who also learned about the attack from Geppa and wants to prevent it, is shot by the gangsters. Ciro starts a civil life. He looks after his siblings and follows in his father's footsteps.
background
The film was shot entirely "on location" in the streets around the Colosseum and the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
Some scenes take place on the Marrana, an irrigation canal built in the Middle Ages that was filled in during the post-war development work.
The German dubbed version was directed by Joachim Brinkmann .
Reviews
"Narrated in a calm narrative flow in the style of Italian neoverism, sometimes with somewhat cheap means, carried by fresh amateur actors."
"This is how Castellani succeeds in a coherent description of the milieu of Rome, a city that is still directly under the influence of social changes."
“ Sotto il Sole di Roma is a realistic film, without pathos and tragedy, without comedy and without sensations. A film with a little sorrow and a lot of lighthearted joy. And yet a war film. A lifelike, unsophisticated, artistic image of Roman youth with a rolling war tune. "
